Elements Of Sign Language

Learn What a Beautiful Name by Hillsong Worship in Sign Language (Part 1 of 5) (Verse 1 and 2)

Sign languages use a variety of ways to convey meaning. Elements combine with one another to construct the signs on which the language is based. They include:

  • hand shapes Auslan currently has 38 major handshapes with 28 variants which brings it to the total of 66 handshapes in all
  • orientation signs can be oriented to four different sides of the body, with the palm and hand facing different directions
  • location signs may be placed in different locations in relation to the body
  • movement this includes head, arm and hand movement. Movements can be large or small, depending on the sign
  • expression this is as important as intonation when speaking. It can include head and facial movements, and facial expression. Many standard gestures, such as shaking the head for no or raising the eyebrows to form a question, are used to convey emotion, emphasis and intensity
  • fingerspelling Auslan uses a two handed fingerspelling system. When there is no established sign, the word is spelled out on the fingers .

It is important to use all elements of a sign language correctly.

The Evolution Of Auslan

In the 19th century, British, Irish and Scottish people who were deaf migrated to Australia and brought their sign languages with them. Over time, an Australian sign language developed its own unique characteristics. Like any other living language, Auslan continues to evolve over time to meet the communication needs of people who are deaf.Just as people who can hear speak different languages in different countries, people who are deaf around the world also use different sign languages, such as:

  • American Sign Language
  • French Sign Language

and many more. Sign language is influenced by the culture, language and traditions of each country, as are many spoken languages. International Sign is a language that many deaf people learn in order to communicate more effectively with each other, especially at international events such as congresses or the Deaflympic Games. Due to historical influences, Auslan is more like BSL than ASL.

Beautiful Words For Love From Around The World And Their Literal Translations Into English

Benny Lewis

Full disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. ?

There are so many different ways to say I love you and to share the love.

I made this video guide to help you get started:

Keep reading for an in-depth overview.

There are more words for love than there are languages in the world. Let me explain with an example:

The Japanese language has dozens of ways to say you. There are polite forms, very polite forms, impolite forms and downright rude forms.

There are different ways of addressing men and women, immediate superiors, higher superiors, inferior colleagues, male children, female children, your boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse. There are even different ways to address a suspected criminal depending on whether theyve just been accused, are on trial, or have been convicted.

Do all these different words for you exist just to annoy foreigners learning Japanese? Of course not. Theyre integral to Japanese culture, and they give foreigners valuable insight into an intangible aspect of that culture, namely that status and relationships are very important in Japan.

Likewise, there are many languages that have several different ways to express the concept of love. What do you suppose this says about those cultures?

English has a few different words for different kinds of love, including fondness, affection, and infatuation . But when it comes to the word love itself, this one word can express all of these concepts and more.

Languages With Gender Neutral Terms For Beautiful

Some languages use a gender neutral word term to mean beautiful rather than or in addition to having different words for men or women.

  • Afrikaans – pragtige
  • Yoruba – lwa
  • Zulu – muhle
  • Of course, this isnt an exhaustive list of every possible way to say beautiful in a different language. While it includes many widely spoken languages and others that are more specific to a particular geographic area, these arent the only ways to say beautiful in other languages. There are hundreds of languages spoken around the world, so they are not all included here. Even some of the languages listed have additional words or phrases that also mean beautiful. Using a foreign language dictionary is a great way to identify even more options.

    Relationships With Spoken Languages

There is a common misconception that sign languages are somehow dependent on spoken languages: that they are spoken language expressed in signs, or that they were invented by hearing people. Similarities in language processing in the brain between signed and spoken languages further perpetuated this misconception. Hearing teachers in deaf schools, such as or Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, are often incorrectly referred to as “inventors” of sign language. Instead, sign languages, like all natural languages, are developed by the people who use them, in this case, deaf people, who may have little or no knowledge of any spoken language.

As a sign language develops, it sometimes borrows elements from spoken languages, just as all languages borrow from other languages that they are in contact with. Sign languages vary in how much they borrow from spoken languages. In many sign languages, a manual alphabet may be used in signed communication to borrow a word from a spoken language, by spelling out the letters. This is most commonly used for proper names of people and places it is also used in some languages for concepts for which no sign is available at that moment, particularly if the people involved are to some extent bilingual in the spoken language. Fingerspelling can sometimes be a source of new signs, such as initialized signs, in which the handshape represents the first letter of a spoken word with the same meaning.

Use Of Sign Languages In Hearing Communities

On occasion, where the prevalence of deaf people is high enough, a deaf sign language has been taken up by an entire local community, forming what is sometimes called a “village sign language” or “shared signing community”. Typically this happens in small, tightly integrated communities with a closed gene pool. Famous examples include:

In such communities deaf people are generally well-integrated in the general community and not socially disadvantaged, so much so that it is difficult to speak of a separate “Deaf” community.

Many Australian Aboriginal sign languages arose in a context of extensive speech taboos, such as during mourning and initiation rites. They are or were especially highly developed among the Warlpiri, Warumungu, Dieri, Kaytetye, Arrernte, and Warlmanpa, and are based on their respective spoken languages.

Sign language is also used by some people as a form of alternative or augmentative communication by people who can hear but cannot use their voices to speak.

Some sign languages have obtained some form of legal recognition, while others have no status at all. Sarah Batterbury has argued that sign languages should be recognized and supported not merely as an accommodation for the disabled, but as the communication medium of language communities.

    Spanish Words For Love

While Spanish really only has one noun for love , when it comes to the verb to love, there are three different Spanish words to choose from. These depend on context, of course.

    • Querer: The word querer is the general term to use when you love a person, including friends, family or romantic partners. It also translates into English as to want, but dont let that confuse you. Te quiero is not the equivalent of the decidedly un-romantic English sentence I want you. It makes more sense to look at the word querer as a homonym having two distinct meanings in Spanish: love and want. Just like the word love in English can also refer to a score of zero in tennis, which has nothing to do with the feeling of love.
    • Amar: Amar is a much stronger version of querer, and is only used in a romantic way.
    • Encantar: You might recognize the origin of the English word enchant in the Spanish verb encantar. This word is most similar to the English word love when referring to activities. It indicates a strong like. If youd say I love studying Spanish in English, then use encantar for the Spanish translation: Me encanta estudiar español.

    Language Endangerment And Extinction

As with any spoken language, sign languages are also vulnerable to becoming endangered. For example, a sign language used by a small community may be endangered and even abandoned as users shift to a sign language used by a larger community, as has happened with Hawai’i Sign Language, which is almost extinct except for a few elderly signers. Even nationally recognised sign languages can be endangered for example, New Zealand Sign Language is losing users. Methods are being developed to assess the language vitality of sign languages.
