How to Connect Your Hearing Aids to Android Phones!

Like many technical fields, audiology is rife with acronyms. Many are identical to those used in other fields, to the consternation of anyone trying to learn them. Take REM or CIC, for example. Recently, a new acronym has begun to make inroads in audiology, or at least in the area of hearing aids: MFi. An abbreviation for Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad, MFi is a licensing program from Apple for developers of hardware and software peripherals that work with their iOS devices . It means that an electronic accessory has been designed to connect specifically to iPhone and has been certified by the developer to meet Apple performance standards. Manufacturers who join this program are allowed to display related logos on their products. When speaking of hearing aids, these peripherals may be accessory devices that communicate with iOS devices, or they may be the hearing aids themselves.

Direct Streaming To Hearing Aids For Android 10 Users

Industry News, Technology, Troubleshooting

ReSounds smart technology has been a huge step forward for the power and performance that our patients have in their ears.

Since 2013, Resound hearing aid wearers have enjoyed advanced connectivity to their Apple cell phones and devices which has allowed them to stream music, audio, and phone calls directly from their Apple devices to their hearing aids.

Many of our patients often tell us how this makes their life so much easier and means that the once challenging task of having a phone call with a hearing loss has never been easier.

But some of these advanced features were not previously available to Android users, who were limited to more basic features such as volume and program controls.

But that has now all changed for some Android devices using the Android 10 operating system.

In late February, ReSound announced that they have released an update to the ReSound Smart 3D app, which means LiNX Quattro wearers who use a compatible Android can now enjoy all of the above mentioned advanced features

Streaming for phone calls and music can be accessed by downloading the latest Resound Smart 3D app and following the prompts on the screen.

With a focus on hearing accessibility, GN Hearing, the parent company of ReSound, together with Google, have announced direct streaming from Android devices to hearing devices for the first time using Bluetooth technology.

The technology is based on a new hearing aid specification, Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids on Bluetooth Low Energy Connection-Oriented Channels, which Google and GN Hearing collaborated on. This new direct streaming technology with compatible Android devices allows people to use their hearing devices to enjoy music, take calls, and more, while using a protocol designed to maximize battery life.

Weve partnered up with some of the leading technology companies in the world to deliver innovation with the user at heart. Now people with hearing loss can enjoy effortless streaming all day long and easily connect with people.

Jakob Gudbrand, CEO and President of GN Hearing ,

With the official release of Android 10, Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, and Pixel 3a XL Smartphones will be the first Android phones to support direct streaming to ReSound LiNX Quattro hearing aids. The new streaming technology will be available by way of an update to Android 10, plus a software update on the hearing devices. The streaming specification is open source, which allows other manufacturers of hearing aids and Android devices to offer direct audio streaming in the near future.

To make things easier, attached is a reference sheet I put together to highlight some important points and the steps involved in pairing to Androids. The key points are that direct audio streaming is only for Quattros that have the latest firmware. Confirm this by hooking up to the software and, when proceeding to the fitting screen, you’ll be prompted if an update is needed. This is done wirelessly. The Android must be a compatible device running OS 10. I have included the steps to confirm this on the attached sheet.

AirPods 2 may nearly be here, and anticipation is growing, including my fellow Forbes contributors, like Curtis Silver.

In the meantime, the iOS update to iOS 12 last September added Listen Live functionality to AirPods. I tested this feature when it was first announced back in June last year and covered it for Forbes, here. In case you missed it, heres what Listen Live is, and why its a big deal.

Live Listen allows the microphone of an iPhone to transmit audio to paired AirPods. Live Listen has been around for over four years and worked with a select series of certain hearing aids so they could pick up the audio from the iPhone, amplifying it for the listener. Until last fall it has only worked with Made for iPhone hearing aids but with iOS 12 you can add AirPods to that list.

Bluetooth Hearing Aids And Android Phones

While iPhone users have been enjoying direct connectivity to their hearing aids for years, this is a relatively new feature for Android users.

Even today, the majority of hearing aids on the market cannot pair directly to Android-based phones, requiring the use of a Bluetooth adapter.

    However, progress is being made.

As ReSound led the Made for iPhone revolution, this time it has been Swiss-based hearing aid manufacturer Phonak leading the way.

From 2014-2018, while all the other major hearing aid manufacturers were focused on developing their Made for iPhone hearing aids, Phonak had different plans. Phonak instead committed to developing a Bluetooth hearing aid that could connect to all phones- Samsung, iPhone, Google, Motorola- you name it.

In the fall of 2018, Phonak hit it out of the park with their Made for All hearing aid, .

Below is a brief introduction to the Phonak Marvel.

A Made for All hearing aid is a hearing aid which can be directly paired with all phones via Bluetooth- including Android, iPhone, and most other classic cell phones. As a result of this direct connectivity, users can stream audio from their phone to their hearing aids, use their phone to adjust settings of the hearing aids, and use their hearing aids similarly to a Bluetooth headset.

Not only do Made for All hearing aids like Phonak Marvel connect to a wider array of devices, they also provide a unique feature that no Made for iPhone hearing aids do- truly hands-free calling.

How To Pair Hearing Aids With A Smartphone Using Bluetooth

Naturally, there will be slight differences to this process depending on the specific hearing aid and smartphone youre using, but for 2.4 GHz-enabled hearing aids the process is fairly universal.1. Turn Bluetooth on on your smartphone. You can usually find it in the device Settings or even on its control menu.2. On an iPhone®, you will find hearing aids under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices. On Android phones, you will find hearing aids by clicking into the Bluetooth menu.

    3. If your hearing aids arent immediately visible, you may need to open and close their battery doors or use their recharger to turn them off and then on again.

    4. Select your hearing aidsand they are now paired.
