Signs And Symptoms Of High Frequency Hearing Loss

According to Hearing Rehab Center, you may first notice high frequency hearing loss when you realize that you cannot keep up in conversations, or when someone else comments on your hearing. When you develop high frequency hearing loss, one of the first symptoms is the loss of ability to hear high pitched sounds, which means that you may be able to hear some words other people say but canât hear all of the words in a sentence, or even all of the sounds in a word.

âWith high frequency hearing loss, patients often report they can hear most

speech, they just often misunderstand whatâs being said,â Shannon Basham, AuD, Senior Director of Audiology & Education at Phonak USA tells WebMD Connect to Care.

According to Basham, common symptoms of high frequency hearing loss include:

  • Trouble hearing consonants.
  • Frequently asking others to speak more slowly or clearly.
  • Difficulty understanding words especially in crowds or noisy
  • environments.
  • Developmental and learning delays .
  • Insecurity and self-esteem issues.
  • Tinnitus

âHigh frequency hearing loss can cause people to withdraw from conversations and social situations,â Basham says.

Health Risks Of Hearing Loss

It’s important to address high-frequency hearing loss as its effects extend far beyond struggling to hear. When children have high-frequency hearing loss, it can impede speech and language development, affecting their ability to excel in school. In older adults, untreated hearing loss is associated with a higher risk of cognitive decline, social isolation, depression and injury-causing falls.;

What Causes High Frequency Hearing Loss

High

Your outer ear funnels sound toward your ear canal and ear drum. The three bones in your middle ear called the malleus, incus, and stapes carry vibrations from your ear drum to a spiraling organ in your inner ear called the cochlea.

Your cochlea contains hair cells with tiny hair-like projections called stereocilia. These structures convert sound vibrations into neural impulses.

When these hairs become damaged, you may experience high frequency hearing loss. You have about hair cells in your cochlea when youre born. Hearing damage might not be detectable until 30 to 50 percent of hair cells are damaged.

The following factors can lead to damage of your stereocilia.

A Sign From Spirit Guides/ Angels

Hearing a high-pitched frequency or vibration can also indicate the presence of your spirit guides, angels, as well as other spiritual beings.

I have a spirit guide who uses a high-pitched frequency to get my attention!

It works something like this: Im going about my day to day life, walking into a store, or sitting at my computer, when seemingly out of no-where I hear a clear, crisp high-pitched frequency for just a second in my left ear.

When this first happened for me, I didnt know what it meant. Now, I now its a sign for me to pay attention and to tune in using my subtle psychic senses to receive the rest of the message from my guide!

Unfortunately there is a high probability that a person with tinnitus will also have a degree of hearing loss. This is a correlation that cannot be ignored, as those with hearing loss often have the most extreme cases of tinnitus. At the same time, the hearing loss is not always diagnosed, this means those sufferers often face an uphill battle to get the treatment they need.

Initially, you have to examine the reason that the connection between tinnitus and hearing loss gets missed.

In many cases, people that suffer from this can hear just fine in low and medium frequencies and of course those are the only frequencies that are tested. When the test is passed people are told they are fine. They are told they donât have a hearing problem.

Still, they know that is not accurate.

Can The Audiogram Explain Problems Understanding Conversation

Conversation is a lot louder than a pin drop. The blue line on audiogram in Figure 1a and 1b shows that the average level of conversation is around 45 dB HL, This means that people who have normal hearing thresholds have no difficulty hearing conversation because it is plenty louder than their hearing thresholds. Speech sounds will be heard but only faintly by people with mild hearing loss. Speech sounds may not be heard at all by people with a moderate or greater hearing loss. Older people who have typical age-related hearing loss, with poorer thresholds in the higher frequencies, may hear some speech sounds well but not hear other speech sounds at all. The most difficult speech sounds to hear are consonants because these speech sounds rely more on higher frequencies. Vowels are easier to hear because they rely more on lower frequencies. Older adults will often complain that I hear people talking but the voices are not clear and it is hard to understand what they are saying. Although people with hearing loss often blame other people for mumbling, a more likely explanation is that an older person with a typical high-frequency hearing loss can only hear some speech sounds and misses other speech sounds when people are talking.

Low Vs High Frequency Hearing Loss

Typically, high frequency sounds are the first to get missed when someone has hearing loss. Why? The hair cells in our inner ear that perceive higher pitched sounds are more likely to get damaged first, based on the anatomy of our inner ear. These nerve cells can get damaged for a number of reasons, but exposure to loud sounds is one of the most common reasons, leading to noise-induced hearing loss.

Someone with high frequency hearing loss has trouble hearing sounds in the 2,000 to 8,000 Hz range. They often find it difficult to understand women and children when they speak, due to the high pitch sound of those voices. Certain high-pitched consonants like f, s and th also might get missed, causing speech to sound muffled or garbled.

In contrast, low frequency hearing loss means it is more difficult to hear or understand low frequency sounds, such as the hum of a refrigerator or roar of a garbage truck. This type of hearing loss is often due to genetic factors, a congenital defect or a malformation in the inner ear .

High-frequency hearing loss can be caused by a variety of reasons. These include noise, aging, genetics, and disease. Menieres disease affects the inner ear and often happens to people between the ages of 30 and 50 years old. This can cause tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss, and intense episodic dizziness. Some medications can cause damage to your hearing. Drugs used for chemotherapy and antibiotics are particularly damaging to your hearing health. Aging is also a natural cause of hearing loss because the cells cannot repair as quickly. If relatives have hearing loss, you might also be more genetically predisposed to high-frequency hearing loss. Those who are exposed to high noise levels like machinery, gunshots, or loud music can experience irreversible hearing damage.

The Results Of The Most Common Hearing Test Are Shown On An Audiogram And These Results Are Used To Define Normal Hearing

The audiogram will tell you your hearing thresholds. A hearing threshold is the quietest sound ) at which you can hear a sound. The sound of a pin drop would be near the hearing threshold of a person with good hearing. During a basic hearing test, thresholds are measured for tones at different frequencies that cover a range of five octaves. You can think of the frequencies of the tones used in the test as different notes played on a piano keyboard. Different frequencies have different pitches; like piano notes, some have a lower pitch and some have a higher pitch . The results of the basic hearing test are plotted for each ear on a graph called an audiogram.

    Signaling The Ascension Shift

Hearing frequencies can also be a sort of announcement from God/ your guides/ The Universe, regarding the ascension shift and your shift in vibration.

As you may or may not be aware, our planet, and actually the entire universe is experiencing an ascension process Without going too in depth here, ascension is the process of increasing and raising frequency. This is happening on a planetary, personal, and collective level.

Hearing vibrations or high-pitched frequencies offers a sort of signal that this change is happening.

The frequency may be a sign that youre awakening to the higher dimensions, and tuning into more of your innate power as a divine spiritual being in physical form.

The high-pitched frequency or vibration you are hearing may also offer validation and seve as a sort of indication that the ascension process, including activating and upgrading your DNA is taking place.

    Causes And Remedies For Tinnitus

Tinnitus can range from annoying and frustrating to a person to downright distressing which can affect your life on every level negatively. How to stop tinnitus is a problem the health industry has grappled with for many years and so far there is no miracle cure, no drugs that can magically make it go away and no surgery that has proven results.

There is a ray of hope however, with a good understanding and treatments you can stop tinnitus and prevent it from happening if not cure it outright.

One of the best recommended treatments is learning to do the opposite of what you may be tempted to do in response to the incessant ringing in the ears and that is to relax.

Meditation is known to lead to a more relaxed brainwave state with the result that less importance is attached to the sound.

The key to understanding tinnitus is that it is not a disease but a condition caused by a possibility of many factors such as hearing loss, wax buildup, nasal problems, ear infections and more.

The perceived sound that the ear hears comes from these things but the thing that makes this so problematic is how the brain reacts to it.

A part of the brain that normally filters out a lot of sounds that are not important to focus on things that are like the sound of your name in a noisy room for instance attaches more importance on this annoying sound in your ear and brings it to the fore of your conscious hearing.

    What Is Sudden Hearing Loss

As the name implies, sudden hearing loss can occur suddenly or develop within a few hours. It is still unclear what exactly causes sudden hearing loss, and the medical world is searching for ways to better understand this phenomenon.

The effects of sudden hearing loss range from mild to severe depending on other health factors, and can potentially become a permanent condition. Sudden hearing loss may also occur together with tinnitus. We recommend that you consult a doctor immediately if you suspect that you are experiencing sudden hearing loss. If symptoms persist for an extended period of time, hearing aids can provide effective relief.
