How To Say I Love You In Sign Language All You Should Know

Signing ‘love’- Sign Language

Just like British and American English, Sign languages are not universal. What that means is that there is not one single sign language for all deaf people around the world. There are many different sign languages. Each deaf community can develop its own sign language. Usually, there is a difference in each country. That is why learning sign language can seem a little tricky. But still, there is always this concern of being insensitive generally to disabled individuals, especially to your deaf relatives. This is where learning this language is very important. In this modern century, there are no restrictions on who you can get close to or love. So when youre either dating or close to a deaf person, how do you say I love you in sign language?

What Is The Origin Of The Sign I

The sign for I love you is a combination of the fingerspelled letter I, L and Y. Your thumb and index finger together form an L, while your little finger forms an I. In addition, your thumb and little finger is expressing a Y. So if you combine all three handshapes, you get I-L-Y for I love you. Fascinating, isnt it?

” I have a 2 and half year old who loves this site because she can learn signs to communicate with her 3 months old deaf brother. I have been signing to him and his twin since they were born. He smiles every time I sign “I love you” so I know he is understanding. ” — Brenda. Southern California, USA. February 6, 2000.

One night in December, my two-year-old toddler Juli turned off light at her bedtime. I turned on the light, said in ASL “Wait, you forgot something.”

She signed GOOD-NIGHT and kissed me. She added, good-night, i-love you a-lot. Aww! She signed part “a lot” by herself. This was the moment!

Next night or so, Juli herself signed, “I love you always.” Again, this time she was not duplicating me. Aww! She used the ASL word “always”! She filled my heart with joy.

Next night, I put her in bed and anticipated her to utter the routine in ASL. She signed IX-me LOVE YOU ALOT + ALWAYS translated as “I love you a lot always.” Double “a lot” and “always”! Another surprise! Quite a Christmas gift.

At age two, Juli understood the concept of role-shifting pronouns and possessives that she used them correctly. Though, she often teased me by uttering “I love me” and waited for me to playfully look sad. Then, she would change the sign to “you” and I became happy.

Why Is It Scary To Be In Love

Love stirs up existential fears. The more someone means to us, the more afraid we are of losing that person. When we fall in love, we not only face the fear of losing our partner, but we become more aware of our mortality. Our life now holds more value and meaning, so the thought of losing it becomes more frightening.

Basics Of Alphabets And Fingerspelling

I LOVE You

Most people start their sign language journey by learning the A-Z or alphabet equivalent in sign form.

The use of the hands to represent individual letters of a written alphabet is called fingerspelling. Its an important tool that helps signers manually spell out names of people, places and things that dont have an established sign.

For example, most sign languages have a specific sign for the word tree, but may not have a specific sign for oak, so o-a-k would be finger spelled to convey that specific meaning.

Of course, not every language uses the Latin alphabet like English, so their sign language alphabet differs as well. Some manual alphabets are one-handed, such as in ASL and French Sign Language, and others use two-hands, like BSL or Auslan. Though there are similarities between some of the different manual alphabets, each sign language has its own style and modifications, and remains unique.

Ring a bell? Thats right, I love you in ASL is the very same world-famous gesture used by celebrities to express or reciprocate affection to fans and audiences. Youve seen Presidents Clinton and Obama do it, along with the Dalai Lama, and probably your favorite sportspeople too.

Richard Dawson presenter of the original Family Feud TV show is often credited with first popularizing the ASL sign for ILY. The funny part is, somewhere down the line it got confused with the sign of the horns, which looks similar but has the thumb tucked in and hence repeatedly confuses rookie metalheads and rockers.

So popular is this gesture in fact, that the ILY hand sign was finally added to Unicodes emojis in 2017. It all began with a petition initiated by Western Oregon University professor C.M. Hall and Oregon Association of the Deaf interim president Chad A. Ludwig. Thanks to them, a deaf culture symbol is now daily online culture and not just for famous people.

Learn How To Fingerspell Like A Pro

Once youve learnt how to fingerspell each letter of the alphabet, its time to polish your form! Check out these tips to improve your fingerspelling:

  • Pause between spelling individual words. This improves the comprehensibility of your signing.
  • Keep your hand in one place while spelling each word. This can take practice, but it makes it much clearer for others to read back. An exception to this is when you are fingerspelling an acronym. In this instance, move each letter in a small circle to let people know not to read the letters together as a single word.
  • If you are fingerspelling a word that has a double letter, bounce your hand between those two letters to indicate the repetition of that letter. You can also do this by sliding the letter slightly to the side to indication it should be doubled. It can be difficult to not bounce between every letter when first learning to fingerspell. You can use your free hand to hold your write to help steady it while practicing. Eventually, youll get used to keeping your hand steady by itself while fingerspelling.
  • Keep your fingerspelling hand at the height of your shoulder. This is the most comfortable position for your signing and the other persons reading.
  • Keep your pace consistent. There is no need to race through when spelling a word. Its more important that each letter is clear, and the overall rhythm is consistent.
