Why Does Ear Wax Smell So Bad

Don't Miss

The Side Effects Of Excessive Earwax

Awareness: Smelly Ears | Miss Charlotte Burley

But for many people, earwax is manifestly too much of a good thing. An ear canal plugged up with earwax can cause earaches, infections, and other problems. If it gets lodged in a certain way, earwax can cause a cough by stimulating the branch of the vagus nerve that supplies the outer ear. And, not surprisingly, an excess of earwax can result in some loss of hearing.

Guidelines from the American Academy of OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery stress a let-it-be attitude toward earwax and warn against removal unless the earwax is causing a problem. Of course, sometimes itâs difficult to tell if the wax is the source of a problem without removing it and seeing whether the problem goes away.

How To Safely Clean Your Ears

Even though earwax has its benefits, blockages can cause a conductive hearing loss. If you develop a sensation of stuffiness in your ears and suspect earwax is the culprit:

  • Do not clean ears with a cotton swab, hairpin or any sharp instrument in an attempt to remove wax yourself. This can push the wax deeper into the ear canal where it is unable to be sloughed off naturally, or you could even puncture your eardrum.
  • Do not try ear candling. Besides having no proven benefits, ear candling can cause burns, wax blockage, punctured eardrums and serious injury.

When To See A Doctor

While varying shades and textures of earwax can come from healthy ears, there are still some instances in which a person should see a doctor.

Anyone experiencing discharge from the ear that is not earwax should consult a doctor, as this could be a sign of an ear infection.

Also, see a doctor if there is blood in earwax. Additionally, anyone who is prone to buildups of earwax should consult a doctor at the first sign of a blockage, such as muffled hearing.

Some people are more likely to produce an excess of earwax, including people who:

  • have very high-stress lifestyles
  • have a lot of hair in their ears
  • have a deformation in their ear canals

These people have a risk of blockages and buildups of earwax. If they experience any symptoms, such as muffled hearing, they should see their doctors to discuss how to safely eliminate the wax from their ears.

The number one rule for taking care of the ears is to simply leave them alone. Do not insert anything into the ear canal to try to remove earwax, including fingers, cotton swabs, or any pointy tool or instrument.

Putting anything into the ear canal only increases the risk of pushing wax deeper in, where it may get stuck and cause blockages.

Also, avoid using ear candles, which involves inserting a waxed tube into the ear and lighting it on fire. Some practitioners claim that this helps remove wax and reduce other symptoms of ear issues, but no scientific evidence supports this claim.

The sensation of the taste of the ear wax could be due to the post nasal drip from the paranasal nasal sinuses. The cough and vomiting is secondary to the post nasal drip from the sinuses into the throat. When the thick mucus from the sinuses trickles down into the throat, it irritates the throat inducing vomiting and cough.

What Causes Smelly Ear Wax

The outer one third lining of ear canal has ceruminous glands which produce waxy material. It then mixes with sebum produced by sebaceous glands. The skin cells from the lining and the slough off from ear drum mixes together to form more solid consistent substance called ear wax.

Most of us consider ear wax to be useless secretion, but it has host of functions such as trapping the debris which enter the ear canal, preventing bacteria and fungus, lubricating the lining of ear canal, and repelling entering insects in the ear. Ear wax can be wet or dry, and brown or black in color.

Normally the ear wax is slightly smelly and bitter. It is because of the chemical composition and dead bacteria and debris which get entrapped in the canal. The smell prevents insects from entering inside the ear. However, sometimes there is strong odor emitted from ear wax. This is unusual and an indication of an underlying pathology.

Smelly ear wax can be due to various reasons such as an infection in the ear. It may be a bacterial infection or a fungal infection. Infection in external ear is common among swimmers. Ear drum perforation is another reason for smelly ear. Ear wax can be extremely smelly with impacted wax. Largely, the dead bacteria and the stuck debris are responsible for smelly cerumen.

Cause Of A Cholesteatoma

Smelly Ear Infection – Removal of Dead Skin & Debris by Endoscopic Suction – #382

A cholesteatoma can develop if part of the eardrum collapses.

Dead skin cells are normally passed out of the ear, but if the eardrum collapses, it may create a pocket where the dead skin cells can collect.

You can get a cholesteatoma if the eardrum is damaged through an injury or infection, or after any kind of ear surgery.

You can also be born with a cholesteatoma, but this is rare.

I dont want to be gross, but as a former groomer at Holiday Barn Pet Resorts, I could smell a dogs ear infection from a mile away. Whether it be a mild yeast infection, to a more serious bacterial infection, each had its own scent and was very recognizable. Truthfully, it was fairly common for a grooming guest to have anything from a simple build-up of ear wax to a severe, sometimes chronic infection of the ear.

It is not that the owners of these dogs were being negligent. Ear infections can sneak up or even hide for a time, without the owner even realizing there is a problem. All dogs scratch at their ears, right? So, unless it is excessive, owners may not pay much attention if their dog is scratching their ears and shaking their head, both symptoms a dog might exhibit when they have an ear infection. Often, it is not until there is discharge, swelling of the ear, a highly offensive odor, or the dog begins to whine that an owner will realize a problem exists.

When It Feels Like Your Ear Is Wet All The Time

To be honest, this isnt really earwax, but it is understandable that you might think it is cerumen. Wet ears typically mean disease, most likely infection. Ear infections create pus, so that might be why your ear feels wet. That is not the only possible cause, though.

It is also possible that you have a type of skin growth inside your ear canal called a cholesteatoma. A cholesteatoma is a lot like a cyst, but one that appears inside the ear blocking the canal. When that happens, stuff like earwax and dirt build up. This blockage can cause debris to overflow and come out the ear. Any drainage from your ear means you need to see a doctor and find out why that is happening.

Some people develop a type of skin growth inside the ear canal called a cholesteatoma. Its similar to a cyst, but it grows inside the ear and allows stuff like earwax and other debris to build up there. When the canal fills up, the gunk can start to overflow and come out the ear. Any drainage from your ear warrants a visit to the doctor to find out whats happening.

What Does It Mean When Earwax Becomes Impacted

We say that earwax is impacted when it has built up in the ear canal to such a point that there may be signs that something isnt quite right. Its important to note that most people might never need to clean their ears. Ears are designed to clean themselves. Earwax buildup and blockage often happens when people use items like cotton swabs or bobby pins to try to clean their ears. This only pushes the earwax farther into the ears and can also cause injury to the ear.

What Are The Treatment Options

Cleaning a working ear can be done by washing it with a soft cloth, but do not insert anything into the ear. Ideally, the ear canals should never have to be cleaned. However, that isnt always the case. The ears should be cleaned when enough earwax gathers to cause symptoms or to prevent a needed assessment of the ear by your doctor. This condition is call cerumen impaction.

Most cases of ear wax blockage respond to home treatments used to soften wax. Patients can try placing a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or commercial drops in the ear. Detergent drops such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide may also aid in the removal of wax.

Irrigation or ear syringing is commonly used for cleaning and can be performed by a physician or at home using a commercially available irrigation kit. Common solutions used for syringing include water and saline, which should be warmed to body temperature to prevent dizziness. Ear syringing is most effective when water, saline, or wax dissolving drops are put in the ear canal 15 to 30 minutes before treatment. Caution is advised to avoid having your ears irrigated if you have diabetes, a hole in the eardrum , tube in the eardrum, skin problems such as eczema in the ear canal or a weakened immune system.

Causes Of A Smelly Ear Odor

There are a host of different ear problems that could result in a smelly ear odor, with or without discharge. Some of the more common causes have been discussed further. However, it is always advisable to seek professional medical attention to diagnose the exact cause. Some conditions like mastoiditis can lead to serious complications.

Are There Side Effects To Ear Wax Removal

The most common of these changes include:

  • Your ears feel cold
  • Dizziness and/or disorientation
  • Your ear throbbing or feeling sore

The majority of these side effects usually pass within 24 hours as your body adjusts. If there is any throbbing or soreness, we recommend that you keep your ears dry for 24 hours. You can do this by placing a ball of cotton wool coated in Vaseline at the opening of your ear canal. Remember, though, that pushing anything down inside your ear canal could cause damage.

A Skin Condition Could Be The Culprit

Because the behind-the-ear area is rich in sebaceous glands, it’s also prone to seborrheic dermatitis , notes a December 2015 review in the âJournal of Clinical and Investigative Dermatologyâ.

In infants, seborrheic dermatitis is known as cradle cap, but it affects up to 3 percent of the adult population, and it’s thought a certain type of yeast may be a cause.

“This usually does not smell on its own, although it can yield greasy yellow flakes that may trap sweat and other materials, thereby causing a musty or other bad smell,” Dr. Hollmig says.

âFix it:â Especially if you have a smelly scalp as well, see your dermatologist, who may suggest prescription creams or shampoos or antifungals to clear up the crusts, per the Mayo Clinic.

Your Earwax Is Very Flaky

Earwax Impaction

Do not worry, flaky earwax isnt a sign of infection. It is, however, something that happens as you grow older. When someone ages, their body gets a little dryer including the glands that produce earwax. As a result, their ears get a little itchy. Adding a few drops of mineral oil to the ear canal can ease that discomfort and soften the earwax at the same time.

What if your ears have no earwax at all? Its rare, but it does happen. It is a condition called keratosis obturans, and it means there is a hard plug where the earwax comes out. Its unclear why this happens, but researchers do know that the plug is made of keratin, a protein that exists in skin cells. You might feel pain in that ear and have trouble hearing. The treatment is simple, let a doctor pull the plug out. In some, the condition is chronic, and the patient requires regular medical care.

Earwax, who knew it was so interesting. Why not take a look at yours to see its trying to say..
