Affordable Hearing Aids: What Are They And How Can You Identify Them

Affordable hearing aids are real hearing aids designed to address the specific frequency amplification needs of those suffering from hearing loss. Best of all, they dont cost $2,000-$6,000 or more a pair. Instead, they cost $400-$1,200 a pair.

But how can a quality hearing aid manufacturer drop the price of hearing aids this much? There are four ways that affordable hearing aid manufacturers lower prices:

What Matters When Using Hearing Aids

Price aside, Oticon, Phonak, and Widex got high marks for fit and comfort, while the other brands we rated received average scores.

All the brands received high marks for ease of changing or charging their battery and average to high marks for reliability and visibility to others. But for battery life, brands such as Audibel, AGX Hearing, Beltone, and NuEar fared less well than the others we rated.

The Kirkland, Signia, and ReSound brands received high marks for some of the situations in which people commonly use hearing aids: while listening to the TV or radio and talking on a cell phone.

Most brands received average scores for use when talking in small groups. But all the brands got low marks when used for one-on-one conversations in noisy places.

Last, if youre trying to decide which features you may want in hearing aids, CR members also reported on what they consider some of the most important ones.

Rechargeable batteriesthe most frequently chosen featuretopped the list. This was followed by smartphone capabilities, tinnitus masking, automatic switching/adjustment to level of noise in the room, and multiple program settings. The latter lets you optimize aids for different environments you may be in, like a busy restaurant or a quiet room.

A History Of Tinnitus Therapies

Are Cheap Hearing Aids Any Good?

In nearly 30 years of clinical practice, I have seen an evolution of our understanding of tinnitus and the development of a very promising toolkit of devices and therapies to manage it.

When I was in graduate school, the general understanding of tinnitus was that it was a side effect of hearing loss, specifically cochlear damage. There was no cure, and the extent of our counseling was to advise people to get used to it. We offered devices called maskers to cover up the tinnitus for those who had a hard time with that.

In 2000, Pawel Jastreboff developed a tinnitus model that changed our understanding of the phenomenon in two crucial ways. First, he connected the perceptions of sound without an external source and hypersensitivity to sound .3 There had been an understanding since the 1960s that people with hearing loss have a reduced usable range of loudness perception.4 The assumption back then was that this recruitment was primarily happening at the inner ear. Jastreboff extended our understanding of loudness growth perception and proposed that it was more of a brain thing than an ear thing.

In his Tinnitus Retraining Therapy , Jastreboff found that when we hear a sound that we cant identify, we have a negative emotional response. This then attaches the brains attention-getter called the Reticular Activating System to that sound. The RAS is the part of the brain that snaps up when we start to nod off while driving.

How To Find Hearing Aids Near You

Only a few years ago, there was only one way to get hearing help: make a trip to a doctor’s office or hearing center. This was a challenge for many people who didn’t have easy access to these locations.

Now, there are many ways to gain access to high-quality hearing aids, and you can choose which way is best for you.

You can still visit a hearing center to receive an audiologist consultation and purchase hearing aids in person. You can also purchase hearing aids online from direct-to-consumer companies that offer quality devices at much lower prices. Some direct-to-consumer companies provide virtual consultations with an audiologist for personalized assessments and adjustments along with your purchase.

Here’s another alternative: you can purchase the same devices available at an audiologist’s office or hearing center from a discount network for up to 35% less than retail price. When you purchase a hearing aid through this network, you’ll be connected with an audiologist in your area for further care. Big-box stores such as Walmart and Costco sell hearing aids, too.

In the future, some hearing aids will be available to buy over the counter, and a consultation with a hearing care provider won’t be required. The industry awaits guidance from the FDA on regulations that will govern over-the-counter hearing aids this ruling should be forthcoming in 2021.

America’s First Ever Recognised Otc Hearing Aids

Update 14/05/2019: They still make the claim that they are the first recognized OTC, the claim is still rubbish. This claim is outrageously untrue, I mean shamefacedly rubbish. But like all good lies, it merges truth with complete bullshit . In an article on Know recently called “Are Over The Counter Hearing Aids Legal and Available? The Answers” I clearly spelt out that in fact OTC hearing aids do not exist and will not exist until the FDA gives clear guidance on exactly what they are. So this claim is a lie, an untruth, a fib.

Whats Next For Otc Hearing Aids

The draft rules the FDA recently released on OTC hearing aids may help clear up some of the confusion with regard to how hearing aids are classified. If this action is finalized, all non-OTC hearing aids will be prescription devices, the rule reads. OTC hearing aids will need to meet the detailed technical standards the FDA lays out in the proposed rule, such as the maximum volume of a hearing aids output and requirements about sound quality. Two DTC hearing aid companies, Lexie and Eargo, told CR that theyre planning to ensure their hearing aids comply with the new rules so that they can be classified as OTC.

Still, OTC hearing aids wont be available until after the rule is finalized sometime next year, and the current draft could still change once FDA takes public comments into account. Until then, consumers who need hearing help now are left to navigate a confusing marketplace.

Editors Note: A version of this article also appeared in the December 2021 issue of Consumer Reports magazine. It has been corrected to clarify that the Bose SoundControl hearing aid is FDA-cleared.

Starkey Is All Ears As Best

Its a vital sense, but easy to take for granted. However, many Australians are affected by various types of hearing loss. But with technology improving significantly in recent decades, hearing aids are the primary solution for hearing loss, with various models and styles available for consumers who need them.

Unfortunately, countering hearing loss isnt a one-size-fits-all approach, with hearing loss as individual as the person, and hearing aids needing to be just as unique in order to be truly effective. Nearly two in five of respondents to our latest survey said that their hearing aid has changed their life for the better, with a fifth of respondents saying they wished they had gotten their hearing aid earlier.

To find out whats best, we surveyed more than 500 consumers for their feedback on the hearing aid they purchased and used within the last five years. Brands were scored on effectiveness, ease of use, comfort and fit, appearance and style, value for money and overall satisfaction. Those that received at least 30 responses are compared in our ratings.

This year, the answer was loud and clear. Starkey rated best for overall satisfaction and received five-star reviews across all categories!

Hearing Aids At Costco: The Good The Bad And The Ugly

Multiple times a week I am asked, are Costco hearing aids any good?. After all, it is natural to question whether or not buying a medical device at a big box store it a smart idea. Depending on who you ask, it seems as though individuals who purchased their hearing aids at Costco either LOVE them or HATE them.

How is this possible?

The hearing aid technology offered at Costco, including ReSound, Rexton, Phonak and Philips hearing aids, are similar to what you might find in private audiology clinic and they are even required to use Real Ear Measurement when programming the devices inside of a Costco Hearing Center.

How Do Hearing Aids Work

Otosclerosis Hearing Loss

Hearing aids are worn in or behind your ear. They are designed to make some sounds louder by magnifying sound vibrations entering the ear, which helps improve your hearing and speech comprehension. How a hearing aid works is fairly simple to understand. First, a microphone inside the hearing aid picks up nearby sounds. These sounds are analyzed and converted to electrical signals based on your hearing loss, which are then sent to the amplifier. The amplified sounds are sent to the speaker or receiver, which are transmitted to the inner ear by a tube or thin wire. Once in the inner ear, the sounds are transformed into electrical impulses that your brain processes into sound.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hearing Aids

How do I know if I need hearing aids?

Most run-of-the-mill hearing loss is about clarity, not volume. That means most people with hearing loss can hear the voices, they just arent sure what they are saying. If you think you are experiencing hearing loss, youll need to see an audiologist or an otolaryngologist for a full and proper diagnosis.

What are the best hearing aids for glasses wearers?

In-the-ear , in-the-canal and completely-in-canal hearing aids are typically for those with mild to moderate hearing loss and cause no problems for glasses wearers. If you suffer from severe hearing loss and require a behind-the-ear hearing aid, many newer models are smaller and made with an open fit design to accommodate glasses. It is best practice to put your BTE hearing aid on after you put your glasses on.

Why are hearing aids so expensive?

The research and development costs for manufacturing hearing aids can be high especially for companies committed to product innovation. There are also many consumer safety regulations and insurance challenges impacting healthcare product companies and healthcare service providers.

How Do Affordable Hearing Aids Compare To Expensive Ones

Phonak Virto Marvel & Virto Black Hearing Aid Review

In the hearing aid industry, spending more money doesnt always bring better quality. In a case study by the Better Hearing Institute, direct-to-consumer hearing aids are just as beneficial as traditional, more expensive hearing aids. Moreover, the direct-to-consumer buyer enjoys an 80% cost savings with mail-order hearing aids on average.

*Data in table sourced from: Kochkin, S. A comparison of consumer satisfaction, subjective benefit, and quality of life changes associated with traditional and direct-mail hearing aid use. Hearing Review. 2014 21:16-26.

A 2014 study by Hearing Review reached similar conclusions about the quality and effectiveness of direct-to-consumer hearing aids compared to traditional ones. Here are the findings:

From the consumers perspective, direct-mail and traditional hearing aids provide equivalent benefit and quality of life changes from the use of amplification.

Direct-mail consumers are more likely to have positive attitudes toward their hearing aids than traditional consumers, as evidenced by their brand loyalty and willingness to recommend hearing aids to others.

Given the equivalence of perceived benefit, direct-mail hearing aids provide the consumer with high value compared to traditional fittingsespecially for those consumers who had their hearing aids fitted in settings utilizing below-average best practices.
