So, is making friends at work good for us? Gallups research since the late 1990s suggests the answer is yes.
The polling company often asks its clients employees: Do you have a best friend at work? Survey results showed respondents who answered yes were 43% more likely to report being recognized for work done in the last week.
A found 46% of professionals around the world believe having work friends enhances their overall happiness. Building bonds with others can make us feel more connected, which, in turn, can help boost productivity and engagement.
People are more creative and productive when they experience more positive inner work life, including more positive emotions, stronger motivation toward the work itself and more positive perceptions of the organization, explains Professor Teresa Amabile of Harvard Business School, co-author of The Progress Principle. And one of the things that contributes to positive inner work life is a sense of camaraderie with teammates and close co-workers a sense of bonding and mutual trust.
The authors analyzed nearly 12,000 diary entries from more than 200 professionals working in innovation teams in seven companies. They found employees are twice as likely to be engaged if they have a best friend at work.

How To Say Thank You In American Sign Language
First, a little linguistics to warm us up. Cognates are words in two languages that can share a similar meaning, spelling, pronunciation, linguistic derivation, or root. While all sign languages around the world are different from each other, French Sign Language heavily influenced the indigenous sign language to the US, resulting in ASL.
FSL was brought to the U.S. by Frenchman Laurent Clerc, one of Gallaudet Universitys founders. So, it should come as no surprise that the sign for thank you is the same in both FSL and ASL. In fact, according to Dr. Susan Rutherford , approximately 60 percent of ASL vocabulary can be traced to FSL cognates. But dont get caught up with FSL, at least not yet anyway. Lets start with English, since youre currently reading it. In English, thank you requires two words to make sense, the verb to thank and the object you. However, only one sign is used to say thank you in ASL. In this sign, the object you is already included. This is because the grammar and syntax of English and ASL are different.
In ASL, thank you is signed one-handed , with a flat hand, palm facing towards the face, fingertips starting at the chin, and the hand arcing out from the chin towards the person you are thanking, as shown in the image here:

Language Families And Linguistic Areas
Linguists classify languages into language families, or groups of languages that have a common ancestor, representing genealogical groups. These classifications are based on shared vocabulary, sound correspondences, word structure and other features ofthe languages. I didn’t know how much I didn’t know about sign language.
When we were teenagers, my friends and I pretended we knew sign language after we had studied those little cards, about 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches, that showed the alphabet in sign language. It would take forever for me to sign to a friend, “Frank is so cute. I wish he knew I was alive.”
We soon gave up on it.
American Sign Language, the main language that deaf people use in North America, uses far more than those 26 letters on the card. Signers use both hands, facial expressions and body posture. Nodding your head, tilting your head, shaking your head or raising your shoulder all send messages to the person watching you. The movements are similar to adjectives and verb modifiers in spoken language.
For example, moving the eyebrows indicates a question will be asked. Eyebrows up means the question can be answered with a yes or no. Eyebrows lowered means the question is a how or a why query needing a longer answer.
A couple of years back, a fake interpreter somehow was hired to sign portions of the funeral for South African statesman Nelson Mandela. The signs were closer to a baseball pitcher’s back-and-forth with his coach than to any recognizable language system. Deaf people noticed immediately that, in addition to signing gibberish, he was using no facial expressions.
Word order is different from spoken English, too, and varies depending on how well the audience knows the topic.
