How To Clean Your Airpods And Headphones Properly To Avoid Wax Build

How to Clean AirPods/Apple EarPods: remove wax cleaning your earphones/earbuds safely, quick & easy!

If you’ve been using your AirPods for a while and notice a change in sound quality, this could be down to probably one of three things: there’s a technical issue with your device or a problem with your hearing ormore often than notyour AirPods just need a good spruce-up to clear out any wax build-up.

Cleaning your AirPods and other Apple audio devices is fairly easy with a few precautions to bear in mind. It is essential to clean them regularly not only for hygienic purposes and to get the best sound quality but also to prevent equipment damage in the long run.

Keeping your AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max headphones as well as EarPods clean and dry will “maximize comfort and prevent long-term damage to your device,” Apple says.

One of the most important aspects of cleaning your AirPods is to make sure no moisture gets into any openings to avoid damaging them, so you’ll want to use a dry cloth or in some cases a damp one.

Cleaning methods slightly vary depending on the model of your Apple audio device and in some instances it could be safe to use disinfectants.

Generally for AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max devices, if your equipment has been exposed to anything that may cause stains or other damage , users are advised to wipe their device with a cloth “slightly dampened with fresh water” and dry it with a soft and dry, lint-free cloth.

Getting The Grime Out

As much as I wish Apples AirPods were a seamless piece of plastic, theyre not. And the tiny, tiny little cracks and crevices start to fill up with dust, grime, etc. When a cloth-polish just wont do, you have to get up close and personal!

I find a cotton swab is great for thorough cleaning of your AirPods or AirPods Pro. Whether youve got ear wax clinging to the speaker grilles or dirt in the seams, a cotton swab will usually do the trick.

Lastly, if youve got a particularly stubborn smudge that wont wipe away from the surface of your AirPods, you might try giving it a quick swipe or four with a rubber eraser. The rubber will pull the mark from the surface of your AirPods.

After Every Workout Wipe Down Your Headphones And Allow Them To Dry Fully Before Charging

Even if your headphones are water- and sweat-resistant, dont let them remain wet for long periods because water can slowly seep into battery compartments or the earbuds themselves and short them out or damage the drivers. Dry off true wireless earbuds before placing them into their charging case. Do not allow moisture into the earcups of over-ear headphones or into the nozzles of in-ear headphones.

If you need to take your headphones out mid-run, or you cant wait for them to dry completely before leaving the gym, gently shake out any excess moisture, turn off the power, and store them inside the included case or a little zip-close snack baggie. Dont keep your earbuds in your gym-shorts pocket or sports bra without a water-resistant case. Both of these places collect sweat and wont allow the earbuds to dry as fully as they need to. Then when you arrive home, wipe the earbuds, and allow them to dry as stated above.

You Should Clean Your Charging Case Too Here’s How

If you’ve got wireless earbuds, they typically live in a charging case. Since that’s their home, you’ll want to keep it clean, too.

First, use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe away dirt. If needed, you can slightly dampen the cloth with water or alcohol, but avoid getting any liquid at all inside the charging ports.

Doing so, can potentially permanently damage the delicate electronic components.

Youll also want to avoid submerging your buds in water, as theyre water-resistant but not waterproofthat means they can take a couple of drops here and there, but theyll die on you if you dive into a pool with them on. This is especially important to keep in mind if you have a first or second-generation set of AirPods, as they are neither waterproof nor sweatproof, and the same goes for all the charging casings of Apples earpieces. If your AirPods case is really nasty you can dab a small amount of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol onto the soft cloth to wipe germs away.

If youre dealing with a pair of AirPods Pro, start by removing the silicone bit and using a cotton swab to gently clean the inside and outside. Then, use the soft cloth to wipe down the earbud, and finish by snapping the tips back onto the stem. You can also rinse the silicone bits with water if need bejust make sure to not use any abrasive cleaners. Wipe them dry afterward, and only snap them back on once theyre completely moisture-free.

The cap to the bottle of alcohol should hold a sufficient amount of alcohol for your needs.

Once youve brushed away the big pieces of earwax, lightly wet a cotton swab with alcohol and dab up the mesh and nozzle. Use a light touch, as were not trying to rip any cotton off the swab or deep clean, just sanitize the mesh and nozzle.

Repeat this process with the other earphone.

Be sure to swab all surfaces that could touch your ears, as they can be vectors for gunk.

Next, we need to clean the tips that have been chilling in the warm soapy water this whole time. Pull them out and give them a rinse in warm water. Flip out the sleeve and rinse that too. With a dry paper towel or cloth, get the sleeves as dry as possible, then set them atop a paper towel to finish air-drying. In about 30 minutes, you should be good to go!

If you use third-party foam ear tips, only clean using plain water using a damp washcloth. Soap and alcohol-based cleaners may cause the foam ear tips to deteriorate. That being said, also avoid cleaning foam ear tips immediately after using any lotion or hand sanitizer.

Apple recommends starting by removing the cushions from the earcups. Dampen a cloth with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of laundry detergent per cup of water, and gently rub the cushions. Use the same mix to clean the headband, holding your headphones upside downin case there are any droplets, this will prevent them from flowing into the electric components in the cups. Finish by wiping the headband and cushions with a new cloth dampened with fresh water, and then dry them with a soft cloth.

You can also use a cloth dampened with 70-percent isopropyl alcohol to wipe the exterior of the cushions, allowing them to dry completely before reattaching to the headphones. Use a cotton swab to dislodge any debris in small crevices, and then dampen a new one with isopropyl alcohol to clean any other small areas. Allow all the parts to dry completely before reattaching.
