Why Emphasize Early Language Learning
Parents should expose a deaf or hard-of-hearing child to language as soon as possible. The earlier a child is exposed to and begins to acquire language, the better that childs language, cognitive, and social development will become. Research suggests that the first few years of life are the most crucial to a childs development of language skills, and even the early months of life can be important for establishing successful communication with caregivers. For instance, if you were to say “I am an employee” in ASL, you could sign “I employee,””employee I,” or “I employee I.” All three are grammatically correct in ASL.
The comment section of an ASL sentence is similar to an English sentence’s predicate – it says something about the topic. You might see a third element added to an ASL sentence structure to indicate the tense of the sentence. You would normally structure such a sentence as time topic comment. Depending on what you are trying to communicate and the style your receiver is used to seeing, you may alter the order of your signs for clarity. ASL grammar is not strict when it comes to sign order for time, topic and comment sections of a sentence, though many speakers feel that whatever order is least like English is the most appropriate. Expressing the time frame for the sentence at the end can be confusing — most speakers avoid it.

Where Did Asl Originate
No person or committee invented ASL. The exact beginnings of ASL are not clear, but some suggest that it arose more than 200 years ago from the intermixing of local sign languages and French Sign Language . Todays ASL includes some elements of LSF plus the original local sign languages over time, these have melded and changed into a rich, complex, and mature language. Modern ASL and modern LSF are distinct languages. While they still contain some similar signs, they can no longer be understood by each others users.

And as a rule use a clarifying verb like “signed, indicated, gestured” for the first one in an interchange whenever it’s been several pages since the last one. After that, use non-specific verbs like “suggested, replied, answered” and avoid verbs “said”. Its been a while since I last wrote about sign language, but some interesting YouTube videos by Alice recently pulled me back into it.
Below is the video that I found most fascinating. Its subtitled in Chinese, but worth a watch even if you dont read Chinese. Ill sum up the main points in English below the video.
Before I list Alices main points, I need to first explain some background. In the video, Alice discusses the Chinese sign language counterparts of the Chinese words and . The former is the most common way to refer to a Deaf person in Chinese, whereas the latter is the word many in the Chinese Deaf community wishes everyone would use. is the word for mute, and its definitely not polite.

I have to say, this video fascinated me. Theres so much there, linguistically . I think you can tell when a gifted orator makes a stirring speech in a foreign language, and this is the same feeling I get watching Alice deliver her message. Its inspiring.
Check out Alices other videos. Not all of them have Chinese subtitles, but one interesting one that does is an interview with Deaf rapper Signmark. Alice interviews him in international sign language.
I havent watched them all, but it looks like none of Alices videos to date have English subtitles. Im working on convincing her that it would be worthwhile.

Ratings For Semantic Properties
We investigated the relationship between the iconicity ratings and a battery of ratings related to various semantic properties of words: concreteness, imageability, sensory experience, and perceptual strength for vision, audition, touch, gustation, and olfaction. Figure 1 shows the number of items in each language for which we had each measure. Notably, each of these measures was collected with respect to English words, and thus, our analyses of words and signs of other languages use the ratings from their English translations.

Baby Sign Language With Hearing Children
Some hearing parents teach signs to young hearing children. Since the muscles in babies’ hands grow and develop quicker than their mouths, signs are seen as a beneficial option for better communication. Babies can usually produce signs before they can speak. This reduces the confusion between parents when trying to figure out what their child wants. When the child begins to speak, signing is usually abandoned, so the child does not progress to acquiring the grammar of the sign language.
This is in contrast to hearing children who grow up with Deaf parents, who generally acquire the full sign language natively, the same as Deaf children of Deaf parents.
Informal, rudimentary sign systems are sometimes developed within a single family. For instance, when hearing parents with no sign language skills have a deaf child, the child may develop a system of signs naturally, unless repressed by the parents. The term for these mini-languages is home sign .
There have been several notable examples of scientists teaching signs to non-human primates in order to communicate with humans, such as chimpanzees,gorillas and orangutans. However, linguists generally point out that this does not constitute knowledge of a human language as a complete system, rather than simply signs/words.
