Earwax is a natural substance produced by your ear canals to keep your ears dry and protect them against bacteria and infection. Normal activities like chewing and talking actually flake off excess earwax in time, which makes ear cleaning largely cosmetic. By performing a hydrogen peroxide cleaning and maintaining good ear health, you can keep your ears clean and remove any excess wax that might be impairing your hearing.

Who Needs An Ear Tube Insertion

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, ear tube insertion is the most common childhood surgery performed with anesthesia. The procedure is usually performed because of bacteria that travel from the nasal cavity into the ear during a cold or other respiratory ailment. This influx of bacteria stimulates inflammation and causes a fluid buildup behind the eardrum.

Adults can also get ear infections, but children get them more frequently because they have smaller eustachian tubes that are more likely to clog. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says that five out of six children will have at least one ear infection by their third birthday.

Ear infections will often go away with time, but antibiotics can treat them effectively as well. Sometimes, however, a person will experience recurrent ear infections and fluid buildup, or have an ear infection that wont heal for months. These issues can cause problems that may lead to hearing loss, behavioral issues, and speech development delays in children.

Individuals who suffer from severe ear infections that spread to nearby tissues and bones, or experience a pressure injury from flying or deep sea diving may also require an ear tube insertion.

Make Rubbing Alcohol & Vinegar Ear Drops

Heres how: Combine equal amounts of alcohol and vinegar in a very small bowl or bottle. Put 2 or 3 drops of the alcohol/vinegar mixture into your clogged ear.

Try placing a bit of rubbing alcohol in the ear using an eyedropper. Allow the alcohol to remain in the ear for a minute or so and then tilt your head to drain it out. The alcohol can dissolve solids that may have collected in the canal and may also help disinfect inflamed portions of your ear. Alcohol can also allow fluids to more readily evaporate and can help to break surface tension by blending with whatever fluids you may have up there.

Some More Tips For Unplugging Your Ears

Sometimes, making a few changes around your home and making some different lifestyle choices can do much to prevent your ears becoming clogged. Here are some of my best tips for unplugging your ears naturally.

Use a humidifier in your bedroom. This will provide your sinuses with the much-needed moisture and might relieve the pressure that is in your Eustachian tubes.

To alleviate the pain of plugged ears, sit in the bathroom with a hot shower running. The steam helps clear the ear canals and prevents them from drying out. Dry ears can make the body over-produce ear wax which can lead to a buildup of excess wax in your ear canals.

Sinus-related problems can be made worse by temperature extremes. If you feel your nose and ears are playing up, skip the morning jog on a freezing day. If you have a sinus infection read my post about the best ways to treat sinus infections naturally.

Avoid sudden changes in body position and keep your head up. Dont shake your head or stand up fast.

Drink plenty of fluids to thin the mucus in the nasal passages and prevent ear congestion. Avoid alcohol, too much tea and coffee, tobacco, and overly salty foods. They can affect your blood circulation and further worsen the condition of your ears.

3. Warm Compress

Warm compress is one of the natural treatments for unclogging your ears that is commonly associated with cold or sinus congestion as well as getting quick relief from earaches.

The heat from a warm compress will help loosen congestion, unclog the ear and also help in easing the pain. Soak a washcloth in warm water leaving out the excess water and then hold it over the ear for about 15 minutes.

This helps in easy drainage of fluid from the ear canal and relieves you from pain as well.

Alternatively, you can use a hot water bottle wrapped in a cloth and apply it for a few minutes on the blocked ear. The pressure will open up the clogged ear, while also reducing ear pain.

Two Ear Wax Removal Remedies To Avoid

All ear wax removal hacks are notcreated equal. Dr. Nguyen-Huynh recommends steering clear of:

  • Cotton swabs: A manufacturers warning on the package says it all: Do not insert swab into ear canal. Dr. Nguyen-Huynh explains: A cotton swab acts like a ramrod in an old-style cannon. The tip pushes the ear wax in deeper, so the more you use it, the more ear wax you push in. Plus, you may rupture your eardrum if you push too far. Or if you scratch your ear canal, it can get infected because now dirt and bacteria can penetrate under your skin.
  • Ear wax removal candles: Dr. Nguyen-Huynh says you should doubly stay away from this method: These candles dont work, AND they may burn you.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar And Alcohol

Apple cider vinegar has amazing health benefits and using it together with rubbing alcohol is a great way to unclog ears naturally. The ACV mixture also has antibacterial properties that can help to reduce any ear infection that is causing clogged ears. The low pH content of ACV also helps to reduce any itching in and around your ear canal.

Pediatrician Dr. David Hill says that this concoction will soften the troublesome ear wax, allowing it to flow out of the ear more easily.

To use apple cider vinegar and alcohol to remove excess wax from your ears, this is what you should do:

    • Mix equal amounts of ACV and rubbing alcohol.
    • Put a few drops of this solution in your ear.
    • Keep your head sideways, so the ear wax remedy stays in.
    • You can also put a piece of cotton ball over your ear to prevent the fluid from dripping out.
    • Let it work for 10 minutes to soften the wax buildup.
    • Remove the wax carefully from the outer part of your ear with a cotton bud.

You can repeat this remedy 2-3 times if you have a large blockage of ear wax.

Ear Problems & Infections : How to Clear a Clogged Ear

You shouldnt stick a lit candle in your ear which should go without saying. Ear candling is an old technique of inserting a hollow candle in your ear and lighting it which is very unscientific. Theoretically, earwax is drawn into the hollow space inside the candle when the heat of the flame creates a vacuum. This doesnt work and you will probably cause a lot more damage to your ears. Dont forget, if it sounds strange you should ask an expert. Dont risk losing your hearing by just trying things.

    How Is Swimmer’s Ear Treated

Treatment depends on the severity of the infection and how painful it is. A health care provider might prescribe ear drops that contain antibiotics to fight the infection, possibly mixed with a steroid to reduce swelling of the ear canal. Ear drops are usually given several times a day for 7 to 10 days.

If swelling of the ear canal makes it hard to put in the drops, the doctor may insert a wick into the canal to help carry the medicine inside the ear. In some cases, the doctor may need to remove pus and other buildup from the ear with gentle cleaning or suction. This lets the ear drops work better.

For more severe infections, oral antibiotics might be prescribed, and the health care provider might want to run tests on discharge from the ear to find which bacteria or fungi are causing the problem.

Over-the-counter pain relievers often can manage ear pain, but a prescription pain medicine may be needed if it’s severe. Once treatment starts, your child will start to feel better in a day or two. Swimmer’s ear is usually cured within 7 to 10 days of starting treatment.

    What Causes Swimmer’s Ear

Swimmer’s ear is common in kids who spend a lot of time in the water. Too much moisture in the ear can irritate and break down the skin in the canal, letting bacteria or fungi penetrate. It happens most often in summertime, when swimming is common.

But you don’t have to swim to get swimmer’s ear. Anything that causes a break in the skin of the ear canal can lead to an infection. Dry skin or eczema, scratching the ear canal, vigorous ear cleaning with cotton swabs, or putting foreign objects like bobby pins or paper clips into the ear can all increase the risk of otitis externa.

And if someone has a middle ear infection, pus collected in the middle ear can drain into the ear canal through a hole in the eardrum and cause it.
