Okay, I know this might be obvious and I know you probably already know how to do this. But, when I first began learning Korean, I used the language CDs that came with the textbook I bought to learn from. The voices on those CDs over-pronounced the words and when I copied them, I sounded like a person learning a foreign language.

I quickly discovered that Korean people never sound like that and a few syllables I was adding were dropped by native speakers. Once I started listening to how native Korean people said hello and goodbye, I soon changed my pronunciation and I began getting compliments on my pronunciation. A great boost for my confidence and enthusiasm right from the start.

If you cannot find anyone locally who speaks your target language natively, then use YouTube to find clips from dramas or news programmes. Listen to how they speak and talk to each other.

Another Secret For Learning A Language Fast Is Talking To Yourself

As weird as this advice might be get wild and talk to yourself! Not by yourself, but to yourself. This means that you can practice by expressing your inner thoughts in the language you want to learn.

People often claim that speaking in another language changes your personality. The process resembles the idea of having an alter ego. If this works the same for you, let your Spanish/Italian/French alter ego speak. It may be frustrating in the beginning, but its super-efficient.

Have A Purpose For Learning The Language

Confession time: I arrived in Korea nearly 17 years ago. In the first few weeks, I told myself I would learn to speak Korean as quickly as I could. I had no goal and because the level of English ability here in Korea is good, most places I went to always had an English speaker. I never needed Korean. So, after 16 years, all I had was what could, at best, be described as survival Korean.

It was not until I set the goal to do a TEDx type talk in Korean in twelve months time when I sat down and got serious about my studying. Six months in and I am on target to do my TEDx Talk.

Every time I sit down to do some studying now, I begin with a two-minute visualization of standing up in front of an audience speaking in Korean about how to become better organized and more productive. It focuses my mind on the goal and it gives me the focus I need to do some quality studying.

Find The 100 Most Common Words And

Now a lot of advice about learning a foreign language will tell you to learn the most common 100 words. And that is good advice. But it is only half the story.

Many languages, English included, have a lot of irregular words. In English, a classic one is teach the past tense of teach is not teached, it is taught. The past tense of run is not runned, it is ran. So just learning the words is not enough. You need to be able to apply those words to common sentences.

A very common word in Korean is the word go but to turn that into to a usable word, I need to change the ending of the word from da to yo so it becomes ga-yo. Now I have the equivalent of go in Korean.

But of course, I am not likely to ever just use go on its own, so I need a complete sentence or phrase. In English, that might be where are you going? In Korean, that becomes odi-ga-yo? You may have noticed I only added odi and that just means where so what I am saying is where go? No pronoun. In Korean, pronouns are rarely used as it is usually obvious who you are talking to or about.

So when you construct usable sentences or phrases from the most common words in your target language, you not only get to learn very common phrases and sentences, you also get to learn some of the nuances in the language.

Study Pronunciation Very Early On

With languages, you can always learn more vocabulary and more grammar, but one thing that you cant fix later on is pronunciation. Thats why Richards is a big believer that one of the first things you should do with a new language is really study pronunciation, because its much easier to get it right at the beginning than try to fix it later on.

As Gabriel Wyner says in his book Fluent Forever,

I encountered three basic keys to language learning:1. Learn pronunciation first2. Dont translate3. Use spaced repetition systems

How can you practice pronunciation? The best way is to learn with native speakers so you can hear how they pronounce things, and then mirror them by repeating the same sounds over and over until they begin to feel natural in your mouth.

Not only that, but it is also a great skill to have if you or any of your friends or family members are deaf or have a hearing impairment.

You know how hard things are for these people when trying to communicate with other people. Its frustrating if you cant hear or talk partially or fully, and in this case, lip-reading might also be a challenging task, which could take years to get a hang onto it.

But, there is a reliable solution for it Sign language.

And the best thing, you can now learn it within the comforts of your home, through online sign language courses.

In this article, Im going to discuss some of the resources to learn sign language so that you can communicate effectively with people having hard hearing or deafness.

    So, lets start!

Eleven: Dont Take Yourself Too Seriously

A lot of people get hung up on little things when learning languages. They become perfectionists, without realizing that you need to make mistakes in order to learn.

Develop the ability to laugh at yourself. If you struggle with self criticism, learn these Two Easily Remembered Questions That Silence Negative Thoughts. Ive learned them in both English and Sanskrit, and that has been tremendously useful.

Being able to give and receive criticism is a powerful skill when learning languages.

Also, dont be afraid to give criticism.

For example, if a teacher is frustrating you by correcting you too often, ask them to scale it down.

When I submit writing to language teachers, I ask them to please point out just three errors. That way I can keep things light and fun and focus on the biggest aspects to improve without overwhelm.

But if you meet people who cant help you or make the journey too serious and destroy all the fun, find someone else. There are plenty of fish in the sea.

Turn Off The Subtitles When Watching Tv

Another common hack for learning languages is to watch TV and movies in that language. In fact, Richards isnt such a fan of this as a core language study format. In his opinion, movies are not a very convenient format as theyre long and you only see one sentence onscreen at a time, as opposed to a book where it is easy to scan, read, and reread. As such, Richards is not a big fan of movies as the main study vehicle.

That being said, if you are going to watch movies or TV in a foreign language as a supplemental learning tool, youd better turn off the subtitles. Because when you turn the subtitles on, youre not listening anymore, youre reading. And if youre reading a movie in English, you wont be learning much in a foreign language, will you?

The bottom line? Dont be under the illusion that by watching a movie for two hours you are making big progress in your language skills because unfortunately, youre not.

Twelve: Be A Stickler About Pronunciation

Let me be honest with you:

Pronunciation has always been my biggest struggle when learning languages. It could be genetics. Ive been tone deaf my entire life.

Yet, I have managed to learn to play multiple musical instruments and a few languages.

Time and time again, I always wish I focused more on pronunciation.

Enter a concept called chorusing that I learned from my friends at Outlier Linguistics.

Chorusing is a great way to improve your pronunciation.

In brief, this technique is the audio version of using flash cards.

Using recording software like Audacity, you record a native speaker speaking a word or phrase. Then you copy and paste it multiple times so you can hear it repeated and really dig into the nuances.

Next, you record yourself speaking it on a separate track.

Since a good audio recorder will let you see the sound waves, you can try to make your voice match certain characteristics visually.

But the more important aspect with this technique is you are training your ear to hear yourself and correct your pronunciation through direct comparison.

The time investment on this technique is admittedly intense. But its well worth the effort, especially if this is a weak point for you as it is for me.
