In this ASL writing lesson, you will learn how to recognize symbols and their meanings in ASL writing; to write your first two sentences; and to read aloud other partner’s two sentences in ASL .
First, look at the basic ASL sentence below:
You might feel a bit overwhelmed at first. Don’t worry. It’s going to be much easier than you first thought. You will find that it makes sense to you shortly.
See the image that explains the meaning of these symbols. First of all, remember that reading ASL is from the signer’s perspective, not a listener. It’s the same way a writer scribes from the author’s voice. That is, an ASL-speaking person reads written ASL from the author’s voice .
The sentence is glossed as “IX-me KISSFIST fs-ASL”.
Terminology: Digibet in ASL writing is equivalent to alphabet; digits are the ASL equivalent of the English alphabetical letters. In ASL, there are over 50 handshape primes, plus a set of movement symbols, and locative symbols; comparatively, there are about 42 phonemes in English. The number of phonemes is reduced to 26 letters. It wouldn’t be surprising that the number would be also reduced a bit in ASL writing.
First the second ASL sentence above.
In the first sentence, you might recognize the first symbol as you just previously learned. Some of you might recognize the second symbol . It’s NAME . The third part in this sentence is a fingerspelled name: JOLANTA.
That is, it’s glossed as IX-me NAME fs-JOLANTA.
Take An Online Course
Online courses can be an alternative to day or evening classes that you take in-person. Some Deaf organizations and universities provide these, so do some research to find the best course for you. For example, Gallaudet University has a free online course to learn ASL.
Online courses are more flexible because they can be done in your own time, or in the comfort of your own home. You can practice as much as you need, and there is often no pressure to complete it.

Spelling Out The Name Through Fingerspelling
Since there is no common sign for a name, when refering to a person by name, you often just fingerspell it.
You can learn more about fingerspelling and the signed alphabet in the “Fingerspelling/Alphabet” section of the site. You can also have any name fingerspelled on Signing Savvy. Just type the name to be fingerspelled in the search box and click the “Find Signs” button.
Since there is likely not going to be a sign for the name, the site will inform you that it was not able to find a sign, however you can have it fingerspelled. In this case, I clicked the “Have JOHN fingerspelled?” link.
The resulting video shows the fingerspelling of my name.
If you are searching for a name that has another English meaning, such as “AUTUMN“, you will see the sign for the non-name meaning. In this case, you want the fingerspelled version of AUTUMN not the sign for the season of the year. To see the fingerspelled version, just click on the “FS” button to the right of the word to switch to the fingerspelled version.
Uber Will Teach You How To Sign Your Name In Its App
Uber is offering basic sign language lessons in its app, in an effort to support its deaf and hard of hearing drivers.
Riders in North America will be able to see a card in the Uber app’s messages section, offering to teach basic greetings such as “hello” and “thank you” in American Sign Language .
It’ll also teach you how to sign your name in a sequence of videos, which is a pretty nifty addition.
Uber, who has “thousands” of deaf drivers in the U.S. alone, says the new feature is in support of National Deaf Awareness Month, and it’s certainly a step in the right direction.
The company started including modifications to its UI for hard of hearing drivers back in 2015. These include having a flashing screen for trip requests, as opposed to hearing an audible prompt, and blocking users from calling, only allowing texts.
Riders who pair with a hard of hearing driver also started getting prompts to let them know.

Not A Universal Language
There is no single sign language used around the world. Like spoken language, sign languages developed naturally through different groups of people interacting with each other, so there are many varieties. There are somewhere between 138 and 300 different types of;sign;language used around the;globe;today.;

Let me explain some of the letters of this alphabet:
You will notice two black arrows in this imageone for the letter J and one for the letter Z. For the letter J, you will make the handshape for the letter I, then trace a J in the air . For the letter Z, you will make a number 1 handshape and trace the letter Z into the air .
For the letters that are hard to see:
C has a handshape that forms the letter C with your hand. I dont like to turn my Cs so that the side of my hand is facing the person I am talking to when I sign them. That can be hard on the wrist after a while.
The letter F can be signed with the three fingers apart or together. I prefer apart because its not too forceful on your hands.
Letters M, N, and T are very similar. For M your thumb is under your first three fingers, for N your thumb is under your first two fingers, and for T your thumb is under only your first finger.
P has the same handshape as the letter K, just with your middle finger pointing to the floor.
Q has a similar handshape to the letter G but with your thumb and pointer finger pointing to the floor.

Many cities have deaf clubs or groups of deaf people who meet regularly and quite often use sign language as their form of communication. Its a fantastic place to meet new people, who share hearing loss in common as well as the chance to polish your sign language skills. How Do Most Children Learn Asl
Parents are often the source of a childs early acquisition of language, but for children who are deaf, additional people may be models for language acquisition. A deaf child born to parents who are deaf and who already use ASL will begin to acquire ASL as naturally as a hearing child picks up spoken language from hearing parents. However, for a deaf child with hearing parents who have no prior experience with ASL, language may be acquired differently. In fact, 9 out of 10 children who are born deaf are born to parents who hear. Some hearing parents choose to introduce sign language to their deaf children. The benefit of having a common name growing up is that whenever I went into a gift shop that had items with names on them, such as cups, buttons, belts, or what-have-you, I could always find one with my name on it.
