Medications For The Treatment Of Urinary Tract Infection During Pregnancy

How to stop ear infection

Antibiotic medications are frequently used to treat urinary tract infections in women who are pregnant. They are typically prescribed for three to 10 days, depending on the type of medication and the severity of the infection. Common antibiotics that have been approved for the treatment of urinary tract infections during pregnancy include:

  • Penicillins: Penicillins, including amoxicillin, were once the principle treatment of choice for urinary tract infections, but are ineffective against E. coli-driven UTIs in up to 30 percent of cases. They are, however, useful against urinary tract infections caused by other bacteria, such as Staphylococcus saprophyticus or Enterococcus. Stubborn, drug-resistant infections may have to be addressed with Augmentin . Penicillins are typically prescribed for 10 days and are generally well tolerated by most patients. Side effects include diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, and vaginal itching or discharge.
  • Cephalosporins: Cephalosporins include medications such as cephalexin , cefuroxime and cefadrozil . These antibiotics are currently the most widely prescribed medications for UTIs, but can only be used in the first and second trimesters. Because of their potency, cephalosporins are usually prescribed for three to seven days and are well tolerated. Side effects of these medications include upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Two Home Remedies For Earaches That Are Best Left On The Shelf

1.OTC numbing drops

Dr. Nguyen-Huynh recommendsavoiding numbing drops. The effect is very brief, and sometimes it does theopposite and stings the ear.

2.Oils

Be it garlic, tea tree or olive people swear by putting oil in the ear to help with ear infections. Whilegarlic does have antibacterial properties, Dr. Nguyen-Huynh urges caution. If youreusing it for a middle ear infection, it wont get to the source of the problem. And even if you do have a hole in your eardrum, there arent studies showingits safe to put garlic in there.

When To See A Doctor About An Earache

Dr. Nguyen-Huynh recommends seeing a doctor if:

  • Yoursymptoms remain after twoor three days, even if youve tried over-the-counter or home remedies.
  • Yourear is very painful, oryou have other symptoms that bother you.

Other common conditions, such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction , can masquerade as earache infections. TMJ causes ear pain because the ear canal and the jaw joint share a nerve. If you have ear pain along with trouble chewing, talking or yawning, then you should see a dentist or TMJ expert to be sure youre treating the right condition, notes Dr. Nguyen-Huynh.

The good news? Hot and cold compresses and OTC pain relievers can also help relieve TMJ pain until you sort things out.

Other medications may also be helpful in treating the symptoms of a urinary tract infection. In particular, phenazopyridine can be used to treat the pain and burning associated with a urinary tract infection. Although safe for use during pregnancy, it should not be taken for more than two days. Side effects include headache, stomach upset, and dark orange or red urine.

How To Deal With Ear Infection During Pregnancy

You develop an ear infection when viruses or bacteria attack the middle ear it affects the area behind the eardrum. Once you develop an infection, you will notice a buildup of fluid, which causes inflammation in the middle ear. You may also experience excruciating pain, especially if you have developed an acute infection.

Chronic infections recur often and can cause permanent damage to the middle and inner ears. You are more likely to develop an infection when your immune system is weak, and this is usually the case during pregnancy. Though an ear infection during pregnancy is annoying, the upside is that it usually poses no threat to your baby. Let’s find out how to treat your ear infection while pregnant.

What Causes Ear Problems During Pregnancy

  • Bodily changes. For example, when youre pregnant you tend to have a higher basal metabolic rate. Your heart starts working harder to pump blood, oxygen and fluids around the body and you can end up with an ear infection if theres a fluid build-up inside the ear. Hormonal changes can also affect your immune system and make you more vulnerable to bacteria and viruses that cause infections, although there is no direct link between pregnancy and ear infections yet.
  • More fluid in your body. The increase in blood flow can also cause an increase in bodily fluid, which may have a range of side effects. For example, you may have a blocked nose more often and that can cause an ear infection.
  • Swimmers ear. This is a common ear infection that is caused by swimming in water that isnt clean or by accidentally damaging your ear. It can cause earaches that you may experience at any time, including during pregnancy.
  • Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss. This is a temporary condition that can happen during pregnancy – usually in the second or third trimester – and which can be alarming. However, the hearing loss will usually clear up within 10 days.

    Causes Of Ear Infection

Ear infections are typically caused by viral or bacterial infections, often as a result of other conditions such as a cold or flu. In the case of otitis media, these illnesses can result in a blockage of the Eustachian tubes. This blockage creates a vacuum which allows bacteria to enter the middle ear.

In the case of outer ear infections, certain factors make the occurrence more likely. These include:

    • Substances in the ear: Water or other substances in the ear may create an environment where an accumulation of bacteria becomes more likely. This can cause infection. The subsequent itching after infection can cause skin irritation, which may make an infection worse. As otitis externa is common in people who swim regularly, the condition is sometimes referred to as swimmerâs ear.
    • Warm weather: The condition is more common in warmer countries.
    • Skin issues: Irritated skin, as a result of skin problems such as eczema, may make otitis externa more likely.
    • Otitis media: Ear discharge as a result of otitis media can sometimes become lodged in the ear and cause otitis externa.

Inner ear infections , in most cases, follow a viral infection, such as a cold or the flu. Less commonly, labyrinthitis can be caused by an infection that affects the rest of the body, such as measles, mumps and glandular fever. In rare cases, both labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis can be caused by a bacterial infection.

    How Ear Infections Begin

Ear infections occur when bacteria becomes trapped in your middle or outer ear. This often occurs via the spread of an upper respiratory infection or through swimming. Outer ear infections are commonly caused by water that gets stuck in your ear after you swim.

Water that becomes stagnant in your ear after you swim is a breeding ground for bacteria. If you are an avid swimmer, then always make sure that you clean your ears out after you get out of the pool. Excess water can lead to a lot of unnecessary pain and suffering.

Middle ear infections can lead to dizziness, high fevers, and ear pain. These ear infections occur through the spread of upper respiratory infections or sinus infections. They can be bacterial or viral in nature, and can cause pregnant women a lot of extra suffering.

Pregnancy is already a difficult time medically speaking, so you dont want to add an ear infection to your pregnancy. Ear infections can be nasty in adults even if you arent pregnant, and when pregnant, they can just be more of a pain than anything else.
