Screenshots and clips of the hand gestures captured by cameras at Saturdays game in Philadelphia went viral on social media. Some Twitter users condemned the gesture as a white power sign. A number of high-profile figures on the far right have helped spread the gestures racist connotation by flashing it conspicuously in public, including Milo Yiannopolous, an outspoken former Breitbart editor, and Richard B. A Chicago Cubs fan angered the team when he made an inverted OK signal behind the back of African-American sports reporter Doug Glanville. Glanville was live on air covering a Chicago Cubs-Miami Marlins game when a man sitting behind him in the stands flashed the hand sign. “Just like words are made up of consonants and vowels, signs are made up of handshapes in specific locations with specific movements,” Auslan signer and linguist Adam Schembri explained.

The Auslan sign for “not”, for instance, is the “OK” handshape moving away from the body. The sign for “perfect” is the “OK” handshape made with both hands. The sign for “okay” doesn’t use the “OK” handshape at all.

Followers of Roof have incorporated the distinctive haircut into screen names such as “Bowltrash” or “The Final Bowlution” or collectively have referred to themselves as the “Bowl Gang,” according to the ADL.

The ADL also featured the newly-formed American Identity Movement, which is a rebranding of Identity Evropa, considered one of the largest white supremacist groups. Members of the group participated in the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville in 2017 that resulted in a woman’s death, and some members were “doxxed,” which is when someone’s private information is shared publicly online. “For all practical purposes, AIM is essentially Identity Evropa with a new name and logo,” the ADL said.

Within deaf culture, there is a distinction drawn between signs used to curse versus signs that are used to describe sexual acts.
