No single sign language is used by all deaf people around the world. Sign languages emerge naturally among communities of deaf people. Sometimes divisions among sign languages parallel those among spoken languages. For example, in Spain, Catalan Sign Language is used in Catalan-speaking areas, while Spanish Sign Language is used in Spanish-speaking areas. Conversely, some areas that share the same spoken language do not share the same sign language. ASL and British Sign Language are mutually unintelligible even though English is the dominant spoken language in both countries. Once youve learnt how to fingerspell each letter of the alphabet, its time to polish your form! Check out these tips to improve your fingerspelling:
- Pause between spelling individual words. This improves the comprehensibility of your signing.
- Keep your hand in one place while spelling each word. This can take practice, but it makes it much clearer for others to read back. An exception to this is when you are fingerspelling an acronym. In this instance, move each letter in a small circle to let people know not to read the letters together as a single word.
- If you are fingerspelling a word that has a double letter, bounce your hand between those two letters to indicate the repetition of that letter. You can also do this by sliding the letter slightly to the side to indication it should be doubled. It can be difficult to not bounce between every letter when first learning to fingerspell. You can use your free hand to hold your write to help steady it while practicing. Eventually, youll get used to keeping your hand steady by itself while fingerspelling.
- Keep your fingerspelling hand at the height of your shoulder. This is the most comfortable position for your signing and the other persons reading.
- Keep your pace consistent. There is no need to race through when spelling a word. Its more important that each letter is clear, and the overall rhythm is consistent.

What Is International Sign Language
The first thing to note is that there is no such language as International Sign Language the WFD and its member countries indicate that what is often called International Sign Language is not a language at all, preferring to refer to it as International Sign . Despite the WFD conferences being the place where IS is used most often and most extensively, all recognise that it is a an invented system of signing to allow cross-language communication or a translanguaging practice.
In the 1970s the British Deaf Association attempted to create a standardised artificial language called Gestuno which was wholly abandoned and put in a drawer. Supporters of IS are clear to state that IS is not a neo-Gestuno, rather a system that allows cross-communication in very specialised contexts, by a very specialised group of users. They also state that IS itself and its usage needs further study and discussion.
What is interesting is that IS can vary depending on who is using it. Deaf people from different places use different signs, yet all is called IS. A signer with a background in ASL will sign a more ASL-heavy form of IS. Equally, someone from Europe will sign with more lexicon and influence from their mother-sign language.

In sign languages, numerous noun-verb pairs that are related by meaning also have the same formal features . In early studies on American Sign Language , this led scholars to conclude that noun-verb pairs are phonologically identical . However, others have remarked that noun-verb pairs are phonologically distinct : for nouns, the movement is repeated and reduced, whereas for verbs, the movement is long, possibly repeated, and continuous or held. In LSQ, some semantically related noun-verb pairs are phonologically distinct in this way3:

Pronouns and definite determiners also have identical phonological forms4. In a sign language, a noun is introduced by producing a sign that corresponds to it. Sign languages make extensive use of space to refer to individuals within a discourse. So typically, a noun corresponding to a third-person referent is assigned a locus in the signing space by a pointer . It is this pointer that functions either as a definite determiner or a pronoun, depending on the context of use. The pointer can take the form of signing the noun in that location , pointing at the locus with the index finger , or directing the gaze at the locus, or inclining the body toward the locus.

How Does Asl Compare With Spoken Language
ASL is a language completely separate and distinct from English. It contains all the fundamental features of language, with its own rules for pronunciation, word formation, and word order. While every language has ways of signaling different functions, such as asking a question rather than making a statement, languages differ in how this is done. For example, English speakers may ask a question by raising the pitch of their voices and by adjusting word order ASL users ask a question by raising their eyebrows, widening their eyes, and tilting their bodies forward.
Just as with other languages, specific ways of expressing ideas in ASL vary as much as ASL users themselves. In addition to individual differences in expression, ASL has regional accents and dialects just as certain English words are spoken differently in different parts of the country, ASL has regional variations in the rhythm of signing, pronunciation, slang, and signs used. Other sociological factors, including age and gender, can affect ASL usage and contribute to its variety, just as with spoken languages.
Fingerspelling is part of ASL and is used to spell out English words. In the fingerspelled alphabet, each letter corresponds to a distinct handshape. Fingerspelling is often used for proper names or to indicate the English word for something.
Asking Questions With Basic Sign Language Words
A single word question can keep a conversation flowing and help you get to know others. An important part of asking questions with sign language is using your face to look inquisitive while you sign. When asking a yes or no question, the eyebrows are raised. With questions that may incur a more detailed response, the eyebrows are lowered.

International Week Of The Deaf
These questions come up often, but never more often than during weeks such as this International Week of the Deaf , September 23 29, 2019. This celebratory week is an initiative of the WFD and was first launched in 1958 in Rome, Italy. It is celebrated annually by the global Deaf Community on the last full week of September to commemorate the same month the first World Congress of the WFD was held. This initiative has gained traction in the mainstream, bringing it extra focus and attention, with September 23rd being adopted by the United Nations as the International Day of Signed Language . The intention of this spot-light day is to raise awareness of sign language and the status about sign language.
Is A Standard Or International Sign Language The Goal
It is ironic that a day and week established to celebrate the diversity and richness and prevalence of Deaf people and their signed languages across the globe should then result in people calling for a unification of languages, an homogenisation of languages to make it easier. Why Emphasize Early Language Learning
Parents should expose a deaf or hard-of-hearing child to language as soon as possible. The earlier a child is exposed to and begins to acquire language, the better that childs language, cognitive, and social development will become. Research suggests that the first few years of life are the most crucial to a childs development of language skills, and even the early months of life can be important for establishing successful communication with caregivers. Thanks to screening programs in place at almost all hospitals in the United States and its territories, newborn babies are tested for hearing before they leave the hospital. If a baby has hearing loss, this screening gives parents an opportunity to learn about communication options. Parents can then start their childs language learning process during this important early stage of development.
Use Of Sign Languages In Hearing Communities
On occasion, where the prevalence of deaf people is high enough, a deaf sign language has been taken up by an entire local community, forming what is sometimes called a “village sign language” or “shared signing community”. Typically this happens in small, tightly integrated communities with a closed gene pool. Famous examples include:
In such communities deaf people are generally well-integrated in the general community and not socially disadvantaged, so much so that it is difficult to speak of a separate “Deaf” community.
Many Australian Aboriginal sign languages arose in a context of extensive speech taboos, such as during mourning and initiation rites.
