  • Lying on your side for a few minutes with the affected ear on a soft cotton towel.

  • Resting the affected ear on a warm compress or blowing warm air from a hair dryer on the low setting into the ear canal.
  • Using hydrogen peroxide eardrops, as long as you dont have an ear infection, ear tubes or a perforated eardrum.

If these techniques dont work or you suspect an infection, contact an ENT or audiologist immediately.

How to Get Water Out of Your Ear

According to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, applying a solution that’s equal parts rubbing alcohol and white vinegar can get rid of the water. The alcohol dries while the vinegar, which is similar in acidity to the ear, prevents your ear form getting infected, explains Dr. Blythe.

A medicine dropper is the easiest way to apply a couple of drops, he adds.

Over-the-counter ear drops from your local pharmacy are typically a similar mixture of alcohol and vinegar, says Dr. Blythe.

Warning

Dont use this method if theres any chance you have a hole in your eardrum, say from an impact like falling while water skiing, or if you have a history of ear trouble. The solution will burn your ear, Dr. Blythe says.

Rubbing Alcohol And Vinegar

Rubbing alcohol and vinegar is an age-old home remedy to get rid of fluid in the ear.

While the antibacterial properties of vinegar will help kill germs present in the ear, rubbing alcohol helps dry up the water in the ear.

  • Mix together one teaspoon each of rubbing alcohol and vinegar.
  • Using a dropper, put two to three drops of this solution into the affected ear.
  • Rub the opening of the ear canal gently.
  • Wait for 30 seconds.
  • Tilt your head so that the fluid can easily drain out.
  • Create A Vacuum Using The Palm Of Your Hand

Place the palm of your hand flat over your ear. While tilting your blocked ear towards the ground, create a light vacuum by gently pumping your palm in and out.

It might take a little practice to get it just right. If you dont feel a vacuum sensation right away, shift the position of your palm to try and create a seal around your ear. If you have long hair, move it to the side or tuck it behind your ear.

This slight vacuum might give the water the encouragement it needs to vacate your ear.

When To Call Your Healthcare Provider

Even if you are unable to get the water out of your ears with one of the methods listed above, your ears will usually clear it out on their own within a day or two.

You should call your healthcare provider if you have any of the following symptoms:

    • Ear pain
    • Redness, itchiness, or flaking skin in the ear canal
    • Sudden or persistent hearing loss
    • Drainage from the ear that is bloody, yellow, green, milky, or foul-smelling
    • Any other symptoms that seem unusual or do not go away

It should also be noted that fluid can be trapped behind the eardrum. This is not the same as getting water in the outer ear canal after going swimming or taking a bath, though both conditions can cause similar symptoms. Fluid in the middle ear is much more common in small children than in adults, although it can occur in all age groups.

If you have fluid behind the eardrum, you won’t be able to get rid of it with one of the methods listed in this article. Your healthcare provider may choose to observe you and see if the fluid goes away on its own , or you may need the surgical placement of ventilation tubes.

This is important because often the problem that you are trying to get rid of is not the water itself, but instead it is the fact that the trapped dirt and debris will end up clogging your ears with even more unwanted matter.

There are two ways in which you can deal with this problem. The first way is by completely cleaning the ears using a good water based ear cleanser.

However sometimes this is not sufficient and the only way to deal with the problem is by using a hair dryer to get rid of the water. The best hair dryers are those that have a small amount of heat on the lowest setting.

This will get rid of any dirt and debris that might be stuck in the tiny hair dryer nozzle. Another important thing to remember is that you need to keep the hair dryer away from your face. This is because the heat of the hair dryer can actually cause your skin to become red.

If an infection develops, people may experience intense itching and increasing pain. The ear may become too painful to touch. A person may also experience fluid drainage or a discharge of pus. A severe infection may lead to fever, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and pain in the face, neck, or side of the head.

Some people will experience recurring ear infections , and temporary hearing loss may occur. When the infection clears up, hearing usually improves.

Rarely, untreated swimmers ear can lead to bone and cartilage damage, or malignant otitis externa. In some cases, untreated ear infections can spread to the base of the skull or cranial nerves.

To evaluate a persons swimmers ear, a doctor will look for redness and swelling in the ear canal and ask if they are experiencing any pain.

A doctor may also take a sample of any abnormal fluid or discharge in the ear to test for the presence of bacteria or fungus if a person has recurrent or severe infections.

A person should talk with a doctor if the problem persists for several days or if the ear becomes painful and inflamed at any point, as this is a sign of infection. Ear infections can become serious if not properly treated.
