Imagine I stranded you in the middle of a remote, isolated nation. You dont speak the local language, and the locals dont recognize any of your words. What would you do?
Very quickly, youd resort to pantomime. And as you tried to learn the language, youd soon appreciate that some people are a lot more helpful than others.
It isnt just that theyre friendlier. Some people just seem to have a better knack for non-verbal cues. They follow your gaze, and comment on what youre looking at. They point at the things they are talking about.
They use their hands and facial expressions to act out some of the things they are trying to say. And theyre really good at it. When they talk, its easier to figure out what they mean.
Researchers call this ability referential transparency, and it helps babies as well as adults. The evidence?
Erica Cartmill and her colleagues made video recordings of real-life conversations between 50 parents and their infants first when the babies were 14 months old, and again when they are 18 months old.
Then, for each parent-child pair, the researchers selected brief vignettes verbal interactions where the parent was using a concrete noun .
The researchers muted the soundtrack of each vignette, and inserted a beeping noise every time the parent uttered the target word. Next, they showed the resulting video clips to more than 200 adult volunteers.

Individual families might experience benefits. But without controlled studies, its hard to know if its really learning to sign that makes the difference.
Its also hard to know if the effect is general something most families would experience if they tried it.
To date, claims about stress arent well-supported. One study found that parents enrolled in a signing course felt less stressed afterwards, but this study didnt measure parents stress levels before the study began, so we cant draw conclusions .
Nevertheless, there are hints that signing may help some parents become more attuned to what their babies are thinking.
In the study led by Elizabeth Kirk, the researchers found that mothers who had been instructed to use baby signs behaved differently than mothers in the control group. The signing mothers tended to be more responsive to their babies nonverbal cues, and they were more likely to encourage independent exploration .
So perhaps baby signing encourages parents to pay extra attention when they communicate. Because they are consciously trying to teach signs, they are more likely to scrutinize their babies nonverbal signals.
As a result, some parents might become better baby mind-readers than they might otherwise have been, and thats a good thing. Being tuned into your babys thoughts and feelings helps your baby learn faster.
And this begs the question: Does teaching your baby signs necessarily give you more insight into what your baby wants?

Floppy: When you sign, your hands/arms/fingers are really loose.
Meaning, they aren’t forming the signs quite exact. It’s like shaking someone’s hand and they’ve got FISH hand. Ewwww. It’s like that, but on your eyes. Plus, it makes it really easy to confuse your audience.
Stiff: Are just awkward, not very expressive, and it’s like talking to a robot. You can also be so stiff that your signs are hard to understand, or easy to misunderstand.

We turn to the debate concerning the existence of an abstract anaphoric mechanism that applies in similar fashion to the nominal, temporal and modal domains. In a nutshell, we argue that ASL loci have all three uses, and thus provide an argument in favor of the existence of such an abstract system. In what follows, it will be a good rule of thumb to take temporal and modal uses of loci to have roughly the same meaning as the English word then, which has both temporal and modal uses the crucial difference is that in ASL the very same word can have nominal, temporal and modal uses and that it arguably wears its indices on its sleeves because of the variable-like uses of loci.

The South African government has admitted that the sign language interpreter accused of gesticulating nonsense during the Nelson Mandela memorial service lacked qualifications and that the company who supplied him had a history of substandard services and in this instance, “cheating”.
Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, the deputy minister for women, children and people with disabilities, conceded a mistake had been made, but denied that Thamsanqa Jantjie was a fraud and refused to rule out employing him again.
“It was bad. Was he a fake? No. Does he have the training? He has only the introduction to the training. That’s like a lot of South Africans,” Bogopane-Zulu said.
“It is the first time I’ve seen complaints come to my office from the deaf community about him. It was the first time yesterday that the deaf community had brought it to my attention.”
Millions of TV viewers saw Jantjie, 34, interpreting speeches by Barack Obama and other global leaders at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg. His gestures baffled and angered deaf people around the world, with experts saying he did not know even basic signs such as “thank you” or “Mandela”.
The African National Congress, having previously pleaded ignorance, said on Thursday that it had used Jantjie’s services over the years, but was not involved in the organisation of the memorial service, and was therefore “not in a position to offer a view on how his services were secured by the government”.

What About Enabling Better Communication During Infancy Is It True That Babies Can Sign Before They Can Speak
This is an interesting idea, and it has been championed by advocates of baby signing programs.
The proposal is that babies are capable of communicating via sign language months before they are ready to communicate with spoken language.
Is there compelling scientific evidence for this claim? Once again, the answer is no.
The best evidence available on the question comes from a few, small studies of children raised to sign from birth. For example, two of the most relevant studies feature samples of fewer than a dozen children for a given age range.
In these studies, the average timing of first signed words appears to be a bit younger than the average timing observed for children learning spoken language.
But there is big problem. The sample sizes are just too small to draw any firm conclusions.
For example, one long-term study featured only 11 infants .
Another study relies on data collected from only a few individuals each age group for instance, just five individuals between the ages of 12 and 13 months .
When we use such small samples, we run a high risk of getting results that are skewed: Its relatively easy to end up with a group of individuals who arent representative of the population as a whole.
And this is especially true when there is a lot of individual variation, as is the case for the timing of language production. For instance, at 13 months of age, its normal for some children to produce as few as 4 words, while others might produce more than 80.
One Module Or Two Modules
Besides the comparison of the expressive resources of spoken and sign language, one could ask whether in the end the logic-with-iconicity at work in sign language should be analyzed as one or as two systems . The traditional view is certainly that grammar and iconicity are two separate modules . But as argued in this piece, there is a non-trivial interaction between grammar and iconicity at the logical core of sign language: one and the same expression say, a singular or a plural locus can display a logical behavior while also having an iconic function. This doesnt mean that a two-module theory couldnt be developed but the relevant notion of module would have to be appropriately abstract. In the end, one will have to develop criteria for what counts as a module on the basis of linguistic or non-linguistic data so as to determine whether one can isolate a natural class of grammatical phenomena that exclude iconicity in sign language, or whether grammar and iconicity are so intertwined that they should be seen as a single unified module. On the assumption that differences across modules also correspond to differences of brain implementation, neuro-imaging data might directly bear on this issue sophisticated research is ongoing on this topic, including as part of a comparison between signs and co-speech gestures .
