My trip to the DMV was easier than I expected. When I arrived, I received a number on a piece of paper that was to be called when it was my turn. I was pleasantly surprised that there were multiple speakers throughout the room and that the announcements were clear and repeated more than once.

When you book your theory test , you need to tell the DVSA that you have a hearing impairment. The standard test involves just you and a computer screenyoull have to read and respond to 50 multiple choice questions and then identify hazards during video clips. There isnt any sound during the test, so if youre comfortable with this format, you can opt to take the test as it is.
However, if you prefer, there are a number of accessible options available to you. Theres no extra cost, but if you want to take advantage of any of them, you will need to contact the DVSA before your test.

You dont need to tell the DVLA that youre deaf or that your hearing is impaired, unless you hold a bus, coach or lorry driving licence. The DVLA doesnt impose any restrictions on deaf people driving cars at all, as it doesnt consider your condition as hazardous to you or other road users.
The only time when you need to let the DVLA know about being deaf or hard of hearing is when youre booking your theory and practical tests. There are different ways in which they can make the tests more accessible for you, but youll only be able to take advantage of these if youve arranged them beforehand.

How Is Sudden Deafness Diagnosed
If you have sudden deafness symptoms, your doctor should rule out conductive hearing losshearing loss due to an obstruction in the ear, such as fluid or ear wax. For sudden deafness without an obvious, identifiable cause upon examination, your doctor should perform a test called pure tone audiometry within a few days of onset of symptoms to identify any sensorineural hearing loss.
With pure tone audiometry, your doctor can measure how loud different frequencies, or pitches, of sounds need to be before you can hear them. One sign of SSHL could be the loss of at least 30 in three connected frequencies within 72 hours. This drop would, for example, make conversational speech sound like a whisper. Patients may have more subtle, sudden changes in their hearing and may be diagnosed with other tests.
If you are diagnosed with sudden deafness, your doctor will probably order additional tests to try to determine an underlying cause for your SSHL. These tests may include blood tests, imaging , and balance tests.
People With Hearing Loss
The only term that seems to be accepted by everyone is “people with hearing loss.” There are two problems with that phrase: It’s cumbersome and it has no easy singular. I don’t think many people would say, “I am a person with hearing loss.” You might say, “I have a hearing loss,” or, as I often do, “I have a hearing impairment.”
However, a number of national organizations have chosen to shift away from using hearing loss altogether in favor of more positive language.
