How To Prevent Wax Buildup In Your Ears

Don't Miss

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of The Various Approaches

What Does LOTS of EARWAX Buildup Mean?

Most of the studies looking at the side effects of ear drops found that they either had no side effects, or that side effects were rare. These side effects mainly included itching, dizziness, skin irritations, and inflammation of the outer ear canal.

The outer ear canal can also become inflamed after earwax has been removed with cotton buds or sharp objects. Removing earwax also removes the natural protective barrier in the ear canal.

Ear irrigation rarely leads to side effects, as long as it is done by a doctor.

Safely Cleaning Your Ears

Normally, earwax works to the outer end of the ear canal, pushed out by new wax production and the motion created by jaw movement. While many people use cotton swabs to clean their ears, these should only be used on the outer part of the ear, never inserted into the ear canal. Doing so can push wax deeper, even if it appears youre removing some wax.

Why Do We Have Ear Wax

Ear wax helps to naturally clean the ear. Its not actually a wax but gained the name from the waxy texture. The substance is a mixture of sebum, skin cells, sweat, and dirt. Furthermore, ear wax keeps water out of the ear, moisturizes the canal, prevents dry and itchy ears, and fights infection while protecting the eardrum.

Without ear wax, many sounds would be louder and cause damage to the inner ear and drum. However, the most important purpose of the substance is to prevent infection and keep the ear clean with antibacterial qualities. Wax can even prevent dust and other substances from reaching the inner ear and causing issues.

Another fantastic benefit of ear wax is it can act as an insect repellent to keep insects from entering the ear. Furthermore, the wax can trap bugs and objects that try to enter the canal and prevent serious issues and irritation. For these reasons, ear wax is a necessary component of the ear.

Earwax Buildup Can Damage Hearing Aids

The Clever Swab

While its important that our ears make the correct amount of earwax for our protection, too much of it can wreak havoc on hearing aids. It can lead to issues such as:

  • Hearing aid feedback
  • Sound being blocked from entering your ear
  • Cause your device to fit poorly or cause discomfort in your ear
  • Damage to the hearing aid and battery from moisture caused by the earwax, leading it to malfunction completely

Heavy Use Of Headphones And Earbuds

Earwax production is often triggered by what hearing health care professionals call a contact stimulus. Objects like headphones, earbuds and even hearing aids that contact and rub the ears are the biggest culprits. By producing more earwax, your ears are trying to protect themselves from irritation or infection. If you notice youre producing extra earwax, try to limit the use of contact listening devices, but if you cant , at least make sure you keep them clean and bacteria-free.

How To Properly Clean Your Inner Ears

You dont actually need to clean your inner ears. Ears are self-cleaning and earwax should work its way out of your ear naturally in time where you can clean it with a damp cloth.

If you do get a build up of ear wax thats causing you problems, visit your GP to have it removed. You can also get drops to loosen ear wax at the pharmacy. Generally, youll apply these drops twice a week to loosen ear wax, before removing it from your outer ear with a cloth but follow the manufacturers instructions.

What Earwax Is And Why We Have It

Ear Wax | How To Remove Ear Wax

So what, exactly, is this stuff? Well, earwax is actually a combination of things. Tiny glands that line the walls of the ear canal produce oily secretions that work as a kind of cleanser. These secretions keep a flow going from the eardrum toward the opening of the ear, catching dead skin cells, tiny hairs that line the ear canal and other types of microscopic debris along the way, explains Mark Vaughan, a family physician and medical director at Auburn Medical Group, in Auburn, California. Jaw movements, such as talking and chewing, help move things along.

Earwax also acts as a protective lubricant that coats the ear canal, repelling water and preventing the skin from drying out. That waxy component is slightly acidic, so it creates an unfriendly environment for the bacteria and fungus that tends to develop in the moist, dark environment of the inner ear, says Yu-Lan Mary Ying, an otolaryngologisthead and neck surgeon affiliated with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark. In fact, the wax of diabetic people is less acidic, making them more vulnerable to ear infections.

If Its So Useful Why The Need To Talk About It

Problems arise when we produce too much wax or when it gets impacted. When excess wax goes untreated, it can lead to earache, itching, tinnitus, dizziness and even hearing loss. The known causes of increased ear wax are pretty murky. Fortunately, our natural jaw movements take care of most of the ear cleaning without any need for intervention.

When our bodies need a bit of maintenance support, there are a range of treatments that are simple, quick and effective in further preventing ear wax buildup. Heres a rundown of the pros, cons and misconceptions of a range of ear care methods for when youre dealing with wax buildup.

Earwax Diagnosis And Treatment

When to See a Doctor

There are some conditions which clearly shows that now you need to go for a check-up:

  • If at-home removal of earwax is unsuccessful
  • If you suspect that you have a perforated eardrum
  • Developing drainage from your ear
  • If experiencing severe pain, fever, or continuing hearing loss

If youre experiencing the signs and symptoms of ear wax blockage then you can contact your doctor. Symptoms could indicate another condition.

You will think that will impact ear wax fix itself. But the main thing is that you never know that if your ears contain more or less ear-wax without the help of someone.

Without the doctors consultant, you couldnt know that the signs or symptoms like an earache or decrease in hearing loss mean wax blockage or not. It can be possible that this symptom can indicate another medical problem in your ear which must need attention.

Removal of wax is done by a doctor in safer ways. Excessive ear wax can damage your soft ear canal and eardrum.

Dont try so hard to remove the ear wax by yourself by placing any device into your ear canal especially when you have ear surgery, having a hole in your eardrum, or if you are having any ear pain.

Its important that your doctor can rule those out. They can use an otoscope, a lighted instrument with a magnifier, to see clearly into your inner ear.

Dont stick anything into your ears to clean them. Use cotton swabs only on the outside of the ear. If you have to have your earwax removed by a healthcare provider more than once a year, you should ask them what they suggest to stop earwax from building up.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Remember, earwax on its own isnt bad. It’s designed to help keep your ears from getting infected. However, if it builds up, it can cause problems by irritating your ears and preventing you from hearing well. Its only safe to clean the outside of the ears and to use drops or water to soften earwax. You should always contact your healthcare provider to remove earwax using an instrument.

Which Approach Is Most Effective

The Clever Swab

To find the most effective way to remove earwax, researchers from the University of Southampton in Great Britain analyzed a total of 22 randomized controlled trials testing different approaches.

Overall, these studies show that cerumenolytics and oils can effectively remove earwax, and that ear irrigation works better when cerumenolytics are used first.

But these results aren’t completely reliable: Most of the studies only looked at a small number of people, and some had other weaknesses as well.

Researchers from the an international research network also looked at studies on different types of ear drops for removing earwax. Their results aren’t reliable either, but they point in the same direction: Ear drops can help. It’s not clear whether certain products are more effective than others, though.

As well as using cerumenolytics, some people use complementary or alternative treatments such as “ear candles.” These candles are placed in the ear canal and then lit on the other end. It is claimed that the candles help to soften and remove earwax, but this hasn’t been proven in scientific studies.

What’s more, the U.S. regulatory authority FDA has issued a public warning that the use of ear candles can lead to serious ear injuries.

Risk Factors For Ear Wax Blockage

Some people are more prone to ear wax blockage than others. Reasons for this include:

  • a tendency to produce a lot of ear wax
  • narrow ear canals
  • overzealous cleaning with fingertips or cotton buds, which pushes wax further down the canals
  • working in dusty or dirty environments
  • inflammatory conditions of the skin or scalp.

Remove The Earwax Blockage With A Warm Cloth

Forget Q-Tips â Hereâs How You Should Be Cleaning Your Ears

This old-fashioned method involves heating the blockage to soften and remove it naturally. To do this, just heat a folded cloth with an iron. Once the cloth is warm enough, lie on your side and put your ear on it. Then, rinse your ear out with warm water using your shower head. You can also do the same thing with a damp cloth for even greater effectiveness .

Kid Ear Wax Removal Home Remedies To Avoid

If you want to know how to clean kids ear wax, its also important to know what home remedies to avoid.

Cotton swabs

The first thing doctors usually tell you about ear wax removal for kids is to not use cotton swabs. Cotton ear swabs are good for cleaning your childs OUTER ear – the part with all the folds including your ear lobes. Cotton swabs should not be used for cleaning inside the ear canal. Cotton swabs are a leading cause of ear injury due to eardrum trauma, especially in children. When you use a cotton swab you cant see how close you are to your childs eardrum so its very easy to bump into the eardrum – its also quite painful! Additionally, using cotton swabs to clean out earwax can be difficult, sometimes it just results in the earwax being pushed further down the ear canal.

Ear wax candles

Ear cleaning candles have not proven to be effective at removing ear wax and sometimes they have even resulted in burns to the person using them so we cannot endorse this ear cleaning method.

Things To Avoid For Cleaning Ear Wax

Are you someone that uses ear swabs to clean your ears? Using a cotton swab is the worst idea since it only cleans the ear wax on the outer surface and pushes the earwax inside the ear into the ear canal.

It is also not advised to use any material like a bobby pin, twisted tissue corner, or any other pointed objects to clean your ear that causes damage to your ear. Do not insert cotton balls into your ear canal. If you are using cotton balls, make sure you only place them in the outer area of your ear.

Also, some people use ear candles to get rid of the wax. But it is not a safe way as the hot vapor can causes burns to your ear.

What Causes Plugs Of Earwax To Build Up

Auris Ear Care â Mobile London Ear Cleaning Clinic

The amount of earwax that is produced varies from person to person and has nothing to do with personal hygiene. The buildup of earwax in the outer ear canal is particularly common in men and older people. Our earwax also changes in older age: The ceruminous glands start to shrink and make less secretions. The earwax becomes drier, but dead skin particles still continue to build up. The outer ear canal can then no longer clean itself as well as it does in younger people.

If a lot of earwax is made, or if dead skin particles build up in the ear canal, a plug of earwax may form and affect your hearing. Experts estimate that removing an earwax plug can improve hearing by 10 decibels. To give you an idea of what this means: The difference between quiet whispering and normal conversation is about 20 decibels.

Older age isn’t the only thing that can affect the ears ability to clean itself. Cleaning your ears with cotton buds or similar objects may cause problems too. Doing so only removes some of the earwax the rest is usually pushed further into the ear, where it may become harder and form a plug. There is also a risk of irritating or injuring the eardrum or the skin lining the outer ear canal.

Hearing aids, in-ear headphones or earplugs worn to protect you from noise, dust or water may also cause earwax to build up and harden if used too often.

Hearing Aid Use Increases Earwax Production

Compounding the problem is that foreign objects in the ear can increase the production of earwax, including hearing aids. Not only that, but they can also interfere with the natural self-cleaning process of the ear.

Under normal circumstances, earwax dries and sloughs off on its own. However, earwax is more likely to accumulate and cause a hearing impairment when this natural cleaning method is prevented when something is in your ear.

How Is Wax Build

Many people try to clean out earwax blockage with cotton wool buds. This is not recommended as the wax is often pushed deeper inside and you risk injuring your ear canal. Also avoid ear candles as they have no proven benefit in the removal of earwax and can cause serious injury.

Instead, use one of following treatment options:

Can I Prevent A Build

Some people are troubled by repeated build-up of earwax and require ear irrigation every so often. In this situation, to prevent earwax building up and forming a plug, some doctors recommend using ear drops regularly – for example, olive oil ear drops. You may also consider buying a bulb syringe which can be used at home to perform your own irrigation.

However, there is no clear research evidence to guide on this issue. For example, it is not clear how often the drops should be used. Different doctors advise different things – from daily, to once a fortnight. It is also not clear if regular use of ear drops does actually prevent earwax from building up. However, if you are troubled by regular plugs of earwax, you may wish to try using ear drops on a regular basis to see if this prevents the problem.
