Sign language is a visual means of communicating through hand signals, gestures, facial expressions, and body language.
Its the main form of communication for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community, but sign language can be useful for other groups of people as well. People with disabilities including Autism, Apraxia of speech, Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome may also find sign language beneficial for communicating.
And as you will see in the different languages below, it has even had other uses throughout history.

Please In British Sign Language
In British Sign Language the sign for Please and Thank you are very similar to the sign for thank you in ASL. The difference is in the speed of the sign and the facial expression.
So the sign for Please in ASL is not used in BSL. Confusing isnt it?! Here is an example:

Where Did Asl Originate
No person or committee invented ASL. The exact beginnings of ASL are not clear, but some suggest that it arose more than 200 years ago from the intermixing of local sign languages and French Sign Language . Todays ASL includes some elements of LSF plus the original local sign languages; over time, these have melded and changed into a rich, complex, and mature language. Modern ASL and modern LSF are distinct languages. While they still contain some similar signs, they can no longer be understood by each others users.

Facial Expressions In Asl
Facial expressions also play a key role in sign language grammar. Our eyebrows frame how our sentences are stated.
In English, we must alter the words and their order to change a statement into a question. In ASL, word order does not matter since we use the eyebrows to indicate whether the sentence ends with a question mark, exclamation mark, or period.
When asking questions with WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, and WHICH, our eyebrows move downward to indicate curiosity or inquiry, like in the image below. When we ask YES or NO questions, our eyebrows are raised.
The second purpose of facial expressions in ASL grammar is connected with emotional expression. When we sign HAPPY, SAD, or MAD, our facial expression must match the sign. This means that signing HAPPY with a sad face is grammatically incorrect.
Also, we use our faces to add emphasis to a sign. In English, if we want to reiterate the importance of a point, we could add the word very before important to provide emphasis. To show emphasis in ASL, we add facial expressions instead of an additional sign.
Furthermore, just like English, ASL does have a tone to it and that is the third purpose of facial expressions. For example, how many ways can you say the word fine and create a different meaning? You can be fine , fine , or fine .
What Is Smart In Asl
Smart in Sign Language Bring one hand up to your forehead, palm towards you, and fingers slightly outstretched. Touch the middle fingertip to your forehead and then rotate the wrist out and away from you. When youre smart you take the knowledge in your head and use it! Use this visual to help you remember the sign.

A positron emission tomography or PET scan uses a mildly radioactive sugar thats put into your blood. Because cancer cells use sugar at a higher rate than normal cells, they absorb more of the radioactive sugar. The areas of radioactivity can be seen with a special camera.

Radio Programming In Blackfoot
Radio station KBWG in Browning, Montana, broadcasts a one-hour show for Blackfoot language learners four times a week. The Voice of Browning, Thunder Radio, FM 107.5, or Ksistsikam ayikinaan went live in 2010, and focuses on positive programming. In 2011, John Davis, a 21-year-old Blackfeet Community College student explained I was the first Blackfeet to ever talk on this radio, Davis said. This is my coup story. Sign languages exploit the unique features of the visual medium , but may also exploit tactile features . Spoken language is by and large linear; only one sound can be made or received at a time. Sign language, on the other hand, is visual and, hence, can use a simultaneous expression, although this is limited articulatorily and linguistically. Visual perception allows processing of simultaneous information.
One way in which many sign languages take advantage of the spatial nature of the language is through the use of classifiers. Classifiers allow a signer to spatially show a referent’s type, size, shape, movement, or extent.
The large focus on the possibility of simultaneity in sign languages in contrast to spoken languages is sometimes exaggerated, though. The use of two manual articulators is subject to motor constraints, resulting in a large extent of symmetry or signing with one articulator only. Further, sign languages, just like spoken languages, depend on linear sequencing of signs to form sentences; the greater use of simultaneity is mostly seen in the morphology .

I also talk a little about how these question words are used. For example, Whats up? in sign language is often used as an informal greeting, just as it is in English. But its also used to ask for more information or for an explanation of a concept.
So you might see a sentence signed like this: That book, whats up? which means What is that book about? Or you might see this: Before happen, whats up? which means Tell me about what happened earlier. In English, Whats up is still considered slang, but its perfectly proper grammar in ASL!

Ever been insulted by a deaf person but were unsure how to retaliate? Or perhaps youve spent time awake in bed at night wondering how to say cum bubble in sign language?
Kristin Henson provides answers to these burning questions in her regular YouTube video series, offering step-by-step tutorials on how to say dirty words in sign language.
The first things you want to learn in any new language are the dirty words, so thats what I started with, Henson told the Daily Dot.
The series started innocently enough. Henson, a 26-year-old American Sign Language novice who previously studied animation at the Rochester Institute of Technology, attempted to order a large pizza from the school cafeteria, using sign language she learned from her friendexcept the employee turned away as if in disgust.
I asked my floormate what had happened and learned I was actually taught the phrase, I want lesbian vagina, not I want a large pizza, Henson on her personal website. From that point on, I became fascinated with learning dirty phrases in sign language.
At the behest of friends who lived far away, Henson started posting tutorial videos to YouTube in January 2011.
Things just grew from there, she said.
Theres even a book deal in the works.
Despite the phrases extremely lewd nature, there are some that Henson refuses to do.

How Do Most Children Learn Asl
Parents are often the source of a childs early acquisition of language, but for children who are deaf, additional people may be models for language acquisition. A deaf child born to parents who are deaf and who already use ASL will begin to acquire ASL as naturally as a hearing child picks up spoken language from hearing parents. However, for a deaf child with hearing parents who have no prior experience with ASL, language may be acquired differently. In fact, 9 out of 10 children who are born deaf are born to parents who hear. Some hearing parents choose to introduce sign language to their deaf children. Hearing parents who choose to have their child learn sign language often learn it along with their child. Children who are deaf and have hearing parents often learn sign language through deaf peers and become fluent.
The ASL fingerspelling alphabet is used to spell out propernames and English words.

Magnetic resonance imaging scans use radio waves and strong magnets instead of x-rays to make images of the inside of your body. The energy from the radio waves is absorbed by your body and then released in a specific pattern formed by the type of tissue and by certain diseases. A computer translates the pattern into a detailed image of parts of the body. Like a CT scanner, this produce cross-sectional slices of your body. An MRI can also produce slices that are parallel with the length of your body.
MRI images are particularly useful in examining pelvic tumors. They may show enlarged lymph nodes in the groin. They are also helpful in finding cancer that has spread to the brain or spinal cord.

Based on the tremendous reaction to this recent piece about sign language interpretation, we thought you might like to know more about it. Here are seven things about sign language that might surprise you.
1. Different countries have different sign languages.
This is the sign for the word math in two different sign languagesAmerican Sign Language on the left, and Japanese Sign Language on the right. Why should there be more than one sign language? Doesnt that just complicate things? This question would make sense if sign language was a system invented and then handed over to the deaf community as an assistive device. But sign languages, like spoken languages, developed naturally out of groups of people interacting with each other. We know this because we have observed it happen in real time.
2. Given a few generations, improvised gestures can evolve into a full language.
In 1980, the first Nicaraguan school for the deaf opened.
Students who had been previously isolated from other deaf people brought the gestures they used at home, and created a sort of pidgin sign with each other. It worked for communication, but it wasnt consistent or rule-governed. The next generation who came into the school learned the pidgin sign and spontaneously started to regularize it, creating rules for verb agreement and other consistent grammatical devices. Over time, it stabilized into a full-fledged linguistic system, ISN, or Idioma de Señas de Nicaragua.

Whether youre visiting the primary school, at the central temple or sipping sweet black kopi at Pak Supardas little warung , youre likely to see deaf and hearing people in animated but silent conversation, or jostling each other with boisterous laughter.
Kolok and enget are paid equal rates for work in the village, I Ketut Kanta told me. Nevertheless, it isnt easy for deaf people to find a job outside the village, and it is sometimes hard to get by here on local labour wages of about US$5 a day.
