Functional Range And Why It Matters
It helps to know just how blood testing results are assessed before we go further. You may assume that when a doctor orders testing and says that your results are ‘normal’ that it means that you are ‘well’.
Results that are in a ‘normal’ range just mean that you are in the average range of all the patients that have got their testing at that lab. It is, essentially, a range of people who are already sick.
‘Functional range’ on the other hand, is a range of the optimal function of the value we are testing.
Based on a functional medicine model, ‘mysterious’ symptoms begin to make sense, and ‘idiopathic’ diseases can sometimes be traced to a specific cause.
During your care we can also assess how well you are responding to treatment based on your bloodwork – you will not only feel your symptoms improve, you will see evidence of your overall function improve as well.
For my patients, I don’t just want you to be ‘not sick,’ I want you to be healthy.
Is Water In The Ear Serious
If youve got water in your ear canal, youre likely to dismiss it as an annoyance or a minor problem. But when water is left in your ear, it can cause inflammation and pain, often referred to as Swimmers Ear. Inflammation of the ear drum can eventually end up causing permanent hearing loss or damage. Despite these serious symptoms, theres no need to panic when water becomes trapped in your ear. As long as you drain your ears of the fluid, you arent likely to develop an infection or suffer hearing loss.

How To Get Your Ears Back To Normal As Fast As Possible
So, if air pressure is the culprit, your ears will usually return to normal in a day or two. If an ear infection is behind your blocked ears, you might have to wait until your body fights off the virus or bacteria at work . And that might take up to a week or two. Sinus infections have been known to last even longer.
Getting your ears back to normal as quickly as possible, then, will usually involve a bit of patience , and your expectations should be, well, variable.
Your first and most important job is to not make the situation any worse. If you use a cotton swab, youre more likely to make things worse.
Don’t Know Where To Start
The right diagnosis matters. Don’t guess what is wrong. It can lead to months or years of unnecessary discomfort and may allow a disease process to develop unnecessarily.
If you disagree with your doctor’s assessment of your condition, get a second opinion.
If you have received no confirmatory testing or your doctor did not take a medical history or look at your full list of symptoms that it is very possible that you have been misdiagnosed or impartially diagnosed.

Sticking Something Into Your Ear Is Never The Right Way To Clean It
Seriously, this is worth restating: dont use a cotton swab to try to clean your ear, because you will only make things worse. Cotton swabs can cause complete blockage by pushing the earwax into the eardrum. As a matter of fact, anything that gets inserted in your ears can easily lead to an earwax blockage, and that includes hearing aids and earplugs. To lessen earwax accumulation, you should only use cotton swabs on the outer ear.

If Your Ear Is Still Blocked After A Weekit Could Be Hearing Loss
So, if your ear is still blocked on day two and you havent any really great ideas as to whats causing it, you might be understandably impatient. In almost all cases, your blockage will take care of itself after a few days. But the general rule of thumb is that if things last more than a week or so, it might be a good idea to see a specialist.
That sensation of feeling like your ears are blocked can also be a sign of hearing loss. And as you probably know from our other posts, untreated hearing loss can cause other health concerns, especially over time.
Doing no harm first will give your body a chance to mend and clear that blockage away naturally. But intervention could be necessary when those natural means fail. How long that takes will vary depending on the root cause of your blocked ears.

Causes And 3 Remedies For Clogged Ears
Clogged ears are a nuisance that many people experience. Clogged ears are what happens when something blocks the ear canal and makes it difficult for you to hear. Sometimes, your ears unclog themselves in a few days. If you want to know why your ears get clogged and what you can do for fast relief, Healthline offers three causes and three remedies.
3 causes for clogged ears
- Eustachian tube blockage: The Eustachian tube connects your middle ear to your throat. Normally, mucus travels from your ear to the back of your throat because your ears, nose, and throat are connected. However, sometimes the mucus gets trapped in the middle ear and, as a result, you experience a clogged ear. With this kind of blockage, there is usually some type of infection, too, which can include the common cold, the flu, or a sinus infection.
- Change in altitude: Another possible cause for clogged ears is high altitude. This happens when flying on an airplane, scuba diving, or experiencing a change in air pressure outside the body. A clogged ear is the most common effect of pressure change, and there are other symptoms people experience that can be attributed to altitude sickness.
- Earwax: Earwax protects your ear, cleanses the ear canal, and keeps debris from entering your ear. Earwax is usually a good thing, but sometimes it gets hard and causes a blockage in your ear. This can be caused by using cotton swabs to clean your ears, which actually pushes earwax deeper.

From ‘idiopathic’ To Diagnosis
In cases of ear congestion of unknown origin it is helpful to assess the function of your internal organs , the overall health of your immune system, if you have any latent infections, if you have markers that indicate a parasite or fungal infection or if you are showing traces of autoimmunity activity.
Often, ear pain or congestion is just one of many symptoms you may experience
These tests should be tailored to your medical situation.
A 65 year old with diabetes, weight gain and a feeling of fullness in her ears will have different tests ordered than a 31 year old with Crohn’s disease whose eustachian tubes have been filled with clear fluid for 2 years.
This functional medicine testing can be done at my clinic, or can be arranged at a hospital near you if you are out-of-state. This testing is usually covered by your insurance.

Purpose Of Ear Irrigation
The ear, especially the canal and eardrum, is very sensitive. Earwax buildup can cause damage to these structures over time. This can affect your hearing. Removing excess earwax with ear irrigation is a safe way to minimize the risk of damage to the ear.
Sometimes foreign materials like food, insects, or small stones can get into the ear. In these cases, the goal is to safely and quickly remove the items before they move deeper into the ear or do damage to the delicate canal. Ear irrigation can be effective in removing foreign materials from the ear.
Earwax irrigation can be done by your doctor or at home using an irrigation kit that includes a bulb syringe.
When To Call A Doctor
While it may be tempting to try to clear out your ears with cotton swabs, trying to dig out something from your ear can push objects further in and cause damage to your ear canal.
Contact your doctor as soon as possible if your ear remains clogged despite using various techniques or if you experience pain and hearing loss. In rare cases, clogged ears can worsen and develop complications.

Try Droplets Of Hydrogen Peroxide Into Your Ear
Hydrogen peroxide, if properly applied, can break up earwax. Hearing experts suggest that you mix the solution with warm water making sure that the water isnt too hot and then place a drop or two into your ear with a pipette. After you tilt your ear upward and put the drops in, a few seconds should be enough to break up the wax blockage. You might need to repeat this several times a day for a couple of days, but ultimately, the clog should clear.

Common Causes Of Clogged Ears Or Pressure
While people can worry about ear problems stemming from conditions such as acoustic neuroma, cholesteatoma, Menieres disease, TMJ disorders, fungal infections, or chronic otitis media, these issues are rare. More likely, a patient suffers from one of several more common and easily treated conditions.
Many people are allergic to pet dander, pollen, and mold. It is not uncommon for these individuals to develop allergic rhinitis, causing inflammation in the nasal passages and effecting the eustachian tubes, resulting in pressure in the ear.
Similar to allergies, colds result in congestion and inflammation. The illnesses also affect the Eustachian tubes, preventing the equalization of pressure within the middle ear.
- Earwax buildup:
While earwax is a natural and protective element of the body, it does not function as it should for every person. Earwax should move down the ear canal and flake off when it reaches the outer ear. Unfortunately, some people develop wax faster than others, causing a buildup, resulting in increased pressure.
Sinuses are hollow cavities in your skull and jawbones. A viral or bacterial infection, known as sinusitis, can cause swelling of these areas of your face, leading to the sense of pressure buildup in your ear.
- Ear infections:
Otitis media is an infection affecting the eustachian tube and the middle ear. The condition leads to poor drainage and fluid buildup, promoting infection growth and spread.

What Can You Do When Your Ears Are Clogged
Your ears can become clogged when the eustachian tubes that run from the middle ear to the back of the nose become obstructed. This can cause dizziness, muffled hearing, and ear pain. To correct the problem, try the following:
- Swallow, yawn, or chew gum to open the eustachian tubes.
- Try the Valsalva maneuver take a deep breath, pinch your nose, close your mouth, and attempt to exhale gently through your nose. The pressure this creates may be enough to cause your ears to pop.
- Inhale steam from the shower to loosen mucous in the ears.
- Place a warm washcloth over the ear.
- Take nasal decongestants for a few days.
If you are unable to unclog your ears with home remedies, see a doctor. Does Steam Help Eustachian Tube
Blocked Eustachian tubes can be temporary if associated with a cold or a change in pressure such as being on an aeroplane. They can normally be remedied by your local pharmacy or by inhaling steam as you would for a blocked nose but, if they’re causing you prolonged pain or discomfort, it’s best to get checked by a GP.
Stuffiness Ear Discomfort And Sinus Pain
Get moisture. Use a nasal saline spray several times a day, or hold a warm, moist washcloth to your face. This can ease the pressure and pain.
Humidifiers will also help keep your sinuses from drying out. Or you can sit in the bathroom with a hot shower running for 15 minutes to curb pain.
Try a . Over-the-counter tablets or nasal sprays can ease sinus blockage which in turn can relieve clogged ears. But don’t use nasal decongestant sprays for more than 3 days, or you will rebound⦠meaning the more you use it the more you need it because youâre congested.
Avoid extreme temperatures. They can make sinus-related ear problems worse. If your ears bother you, it isnât the time to go jogging on a hot day or build a snow fort with the kids.
Keep your head up. If you bend forward with your head down, it can make the pressure worse. Youâll want to skip yoga class until the sinus problem is over.
Blow your nose gently. Block one nostril while you blow through the other.
Drink plenty of fluids. Down lots of water in the evening. When you stay hydrated, it keeps nasal mucus thin. That helps it drain and means less nighttime stuffiness.
