Now is a good time to ask. During most of the 20th century, no one really knew. Not even Deaf people who used sign language in their daily lives knew what it was. Currently, lots of abbreviations for sign languages around the world are in use. Some, such as ASL or JSL, are easily recognized without doubt. For others, more than one abbreviation is used, such as NGT and SLN for Dutch Sign Language . Some abbreviations are in use for more than one language, e.g. ISL for Irish or Isreali Sign Language.
