Th Grade Student Discovery Extends Battery Life

Hearing Aid Batteries: Make Them Last | Miracle-Ear

Hearing aid batteries, the lifeblood for most hearing aids, can be a costly add-on to anyones budget. The average battery life can last anywhere between 2 and 7 days depending on use and models so cycling through new batteries can add up quickly.

But recently an 8th grade student from Rochester, Minnesota discovered a simple life hack or tip that can extend hearing aid battery lives.

Hearing Aid Battery Safety

Lithium-ion batteries that are used in most rechargeable hearing aids are generally safe. However, if they become damaged or begin to fail, they may present a fire or explosion hazard. You may recall hearing or reading reports of lithium-ion batteries catching fire on airplanes beginning in the early 1990s. While this is unlikely to occur with hearing aids, in 2018, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission released its Status Report on High Energy Density Batteries Project which reported more than 25,000 overheating or fire incidents involving more than 400 types of lithium battery-powered consumer products within a five-year period. As a precaution, if you suspect the rechargeable batteries in your hearing aids are damaged or acting up, it may be a good idea to replace them.

Disposable batteries, including the zinc-air batteries used in most standard battery-charged hearing aids, may also pose health hazards, especially if they become damaged and the acid within them leaks out. Health issues that could arise in such a situation include respiratory irritation, skin irritation, or chemical burns. If this occurs, rinse the affected area with water for 15 minutes, and call your doctor if the skin begins to discolor or if your respiration or eyes are affected.

Boys Mind Is Blown By Science Project Discovery Doctors Share Genius Idea

The shoddy battery life in his hearing aid really bugged Ethan Manuell. Now its possible that millions of people will benefit from his five-minute rule.

As part of an eighth grade class project, Ethan, who has worn a hearing aid since age four, conducted an experiment using robotic bugs and found that hearing aid batteries will last up to 85% longer when exposed to the air for five minutes before insertion.

Most people dont know this, so they just pull the tab off and insert it, like its a sticker or something, said Ethan, who lives in Minnesota with his family.

Ethans audiologist, Dr. Mary Meier, has been sharing the news with other patients at the Olmsted Medical Center.

I keep telling my patients about it, its now in the written information we give them when we do the fitting, Dr. Meier said.

Patients at the Olmsted Medical Center who have tested Ethans theory say that their hearing aid batteries are lasting up to two days longer. Currently, hearing aid batteries have to be replaced every 5-7 days. Ethans discovery could save the seven million folks in the U.S. who wear hearing aids $70 every year.

Ethan has received accolades for his discovery, including a U.S. Naval Science Awardan added bonus for the kid who said he just wanted to get a good grade.

Simple Trick Extends Hearing Aid Battery Life

IPAT works with many people who experience hearing loss, and as a result wear hearing aids.

As a hearing aid wearer myself, I am familiar with the need to frequently change batteries and the corresponding cost. When information about an 8th graders discovery to extend the life of hearing aid batteries was shared with IPAT, I decided to put the discovery to the test.

The discovery was the result of a study done by Ethan Manuell, of Rochester, Minnesota. He looked into the effect wait time has on the life of hearing aid batteries. For those not familiar with wearing hearing aids, wait time is the time between removing the sticker on the battery and placing the battery in the hearing aid. He found that waiting 5 minutes between removing the sticker and placing the battery in the hearing aid improved the battery life up to 80%.

I have put his five-minute-rule to the test for over a month, and discovered I too extended the life of my batteries! I use between 8 and 10 batteries per month, so when I can get an extra day or two from each, that five-minute wait represents a significant cost savings over the period of a year. So if you wear hearing aids, or know someone that does, pass on this little trick and save them some cash.

Leave The Hearing Aid Battery Door Open When Not Being Used

Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Your Hearing Aid Batteries

  • Hearing aid battery life expectancy can be between 3 to 10 days, depending on your hearing loss, the amount of time a hearing aid is worn, and the age of the batteries.
  • The 5-minute rule for hearing aid batteries Allow the battery to rest for 5 minutes after removing the sticker. This resting time will enable the air to activate the battery, which can expand its life by days.
  • Hearing aid battery bounce test: Drop the batteries on the table from a height of around 4-6 in. If the batteries bounce several times, you should replace them.
  • Conserve your hearing aid battery life by keeping the battery door open when you remove your hearing aids at night.
  • Store hearing aid batteries in a dry place at room temperature.
  • Battery Life And Operating Time

Most rechargeable hearing aids last a full day. But be aware that battery life and operating time are dependent on how you use your devices. Utilizing Bluetooth to stream audio from your phone, television, or tablet in your hearing aids can drain battery power faster. How fast the batteries drain also depends on the type of battery and hearing aid. Many models also feature a quick-charge option that can provide a partial charge that can last for 3 to 8 hours to help get you to the end of the day.

The Trick To Making Hearing Aid Batteries Last Longer

Hearing aids can be life-changing, but they cant help you if they dont have the battery power they need to keep working. Hearing aid wearers know that when they hear that little beeping noise, theyd better have a spare pack of batteries handy.

Hearing aid batteries typically last between 3-7 days, depending on factors like:

    • The type and size of hearing device you have
    • The type and size of the battery
    • The number of hours per day youre using your device
    • The technology level of the device
    • The environment you live in
    • The way you take care of the battery

Luckily, there are several best practices you can use to keep your hearing aid batteries well-maintained and help them last as long as possible.

    1. Always use your oldest package of hearing aid batteries first.

Although hearing aid batteries can be stored for quite a while, the longer the batteries sit in storage, the shorter their life will be. If you always use the oldest package first, your spare batteries will never get too old.

    2. Store extra hearing aid batteries in a dry, room temperature place.

Extreme temperaturesboth hot and coldand high humidity levels are not good for the life of your hearing aid batteries. For this reason, never store your hearing aid batteries in the refrigerator or bathroom.

    3. Dont remove the plastic tab from each packs battery until youre ready to use it.

    4. Wash your hands before replacing your hearing aid battery.

    7. Use a hearing aid dehumidifier.

Here Are 10 Tips To Get The Most Out Of Your Hearing Aid Battery:

Tips On How To Maximize The Life Of Your Hearing Aid ...

    1. Let the battery “breathe” for 3-5 minutes. After removing the tab from the battery, let the battery sit for 3-5 minutes before installing it in your hearing aid. This “activation” time allows air to reach the materials inside the battery and activate them.

    2. Wash your hands throughly before changing batteries. Grease and dirt on the batteries may damage the hearing aid. Also, grease and dirt can clog up the air pores in the battery.

    3. Open the battery door at night. When you’re not wearing your hearing aid, turn it off or open the battery door to minimize battery drain. Leave the battery compartment of your hearing device open at night so moisture can escape. Doing so will keep the battery from corroding and damaging the hearing aid.

    4. Use a hearing aid dehumidifier. A hearing aid dehumidifier will help absorb moisture out of your hearing aid and battery. This will allow the battery power to be used more efficiently. The dehumidifier is also a great place to store your hearing aids.

    5. Remove the batteries entirely if you won’t be using the device for an extended period of time. This also helps to avoid corrosion and damage from trapped moisture.

    6. Check the expiration date on the batteries. The further out the batteries are, the fresher they are. Over time, batteries will drain slightly while sitting on the shelf. Ideally, you should buy batteries that have an expiration date a year or further from your purchase date.

How To Extend Hearing Aid Battery Life

5 Proven Tips to Make Hearing Aid Batteries Last Longer [CC]

There are a few simple steps that you can take to improve the battery life of your hearing aid. Putting them into practice will help ensure that you are changing batteries less frequently and saving on replacement costs.

Here are 5 easy tips to keep your batteries running at peak efficiency for longer:

1: Follow the 5-minute rule after you remove the plastic tab.

The plastic tab found in new hearing aid batteries prevents them from using their power prematurely. When you take the plastic tab off, the zinc in the battery mixes with the air to provide energy for your device.

Studies show that waiting five minutes before inserting the batteries into your hearing aid can extend the batterys life by up to 3 days. Rather than draining power from the battery immediately, the zinc and air can blend to more appropriate levels for efficient use.

2: Keep your hearing aids cool and dry.

Extreme temperatures and high humidity reduce the lifespan of your hearing aid batteries. As much as possible, try to store them in dry, temperate environments.

Here are some tips for keeping your hearing aids cool and dry:

    • Do not store hearing aids in extreme temperatures
    • Do not store hearing aids in high-moisture rooms like the bathroom
    • Keep your battery door open at night in case any moisture was trapped during the day

3: Turn off your hearing aids when not in use.

    4: Use a dehumidifier.

5: Use your oldest package of hearing aid batteries first.

Rechargeable hearing aids rely on lithium-ion or silver-zinc, also called Z-power, batteries to recharge and power your device. Most come with a charging case. Once you place your hearing aids in the case, they are automatically turned off to charge. An indicator light on the case will blink while the devices are charging and stay lit once they are fully charged.

How Long Do Hearing Aid Batteries Last

A standard hearing aid batterys lifespan varies depending on a few factors. On average, it will hold a charge between 3 and 7 days.

Some factors that affect a hearing aid batterys lifespan include:

    • Size of the battery
    • Use of hearing aids auxiliary features
    • Exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures
    • Exposure to excessive moisture
