What Causes Hearing Impairment
The most common cause of conductive hearing loss in kids and teens is otitis media, which is the medical term for an ear infection that affects the middle ear. Ear infections cause a buildup of fluid or pus behind the eardrum, which can block the transmission of sound. Even after the infection gets better, fluid might stay in the middle ear for weeks or even months, causing difficulty hearing.
But this fluid is usually temporary, and whether it goes away on its own or with the help of medications, once it’s gone a person’s hearing typically returns to normal. Blockages in the ear, such as a foreign object, impacted earwax or dirt, or fluid due to colds and allergies, can also cause conductive hearing loss.

Can Conductive Hearing Loss Be Treated With Surgery
If you do have conductive hearing loss, the odds are good that it can be reversed through a surgical procedure.
Common surgeries for correcting conductive hearing loss include:
- PE tubes. Patients with chronic ear infectionsusually childrenmay be treated with pressure equalization tubes. These provide ventilation and allow fluid that has built up in the inner ear to drain. PE tubes are inserted surgically and should fall out on their own after 6-18 months.
- Stapedectomy. Patients whose hearing loss is caused by a hardening of bone tissue in the middle ear known as osteosclerosis often undergo a surgical procedure called a stapedectomy. This involves either partial or total removal of the stapes bone, letting sound waves pass through to the inner ear unimpeded. 90 percent of patients who have this procedure report a significant improvement in their hearing afterward.
While its great that surgery can, in some cases, reverse hearing loss, its important to note that the vast majority of patients have damage to the inner ear, which cannot be corrected.

What Causes Conductive Hearing Loss
Conductive hearing loss affects the outer and/or middle ear. Its much less common only one in ten people with hearing loss has this type. Recent research indicates hearing loss is expected to nearly double in 40 years. This figure includes individuals who suffer from the condition of hidden hearing loss, which is generally defined to be damage to the inner ear that leads to difficulty hearing soft voices in the presence of background noise, but an audiogram within the range of normal hearing sensitivity.
New research, however, hopes to shed light on how hearing loss and its impact of quality of life can be avoided. Researchers at USC and Harvard have developed a new approach to repair cells deep inside the ear a potential remedy that could restore hearing for millions of elderly people and others who suffer hearing loss.
The lab study demonstrates a novel way for a drug to zero in on damaged nerves and cells inside the ear. Its a potential remedy for adventitious hearing loss a condition that afflicts two-thirds of people over 70 years and nearly 20% of all adults in the United States.
How Is Sudden Hearing Loss Treated
It is generally accepted that steroids , taken orally over 1 to 2 weeks, are the single most beneficial treatment for sudden hearing loss, although they do not lead to improvement in every case.
