Ear infections arent just painful they can also take one to two weeks to fully heal, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. And taking a wait-and-see-approach meaning, without antibiotics is recommended for many children and adults with ear infections. This is based on guidelines published in the journal Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery in February 2016. Natural remedies can also help.

Theres no scientific data to support home remedies , but they may be soothing, and there could be a placebo effect, says otolaryngologist Matthew Bush, MD, an assistant professor of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery with University of Kentucky Health Care in Lexington.

The good news about these strategies? They wont harm you and they might do just the trick.

Rose and Bush agree that over-the-counter pain medications can help you feel better. If you have allergies, getting away from any triggers that cause congestion, which leads to ear infections, may also provide some relief, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

What Is A Sinus Infection

The sinuses, or sinus cavities, are hollow spaces that air flows through within the bones surrounding the nose.;A sinus infection or sinusitis occurs when your;nasal cavities become swollen and inflamed.;Normally, your sinuses are filled with air. When sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection.

How long do sinus infections last? Well, that depends on what type of sinus infection you have. Acute sinusitis can last over two weeks even with appropriate treatment. If your sinus infection lasts longer than 10 to 14 days, then youre more likely to have bacterial sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis lasts much longer at least 12 weeks! Chronic sinusitis with polyps is an inflammation of the sinuses that lasts 12 weeks or longer and is associated with having nasal polyps. Other forms of chronic sinusitis are associated with allergies or a deviated septum and also last 12 weeks or longer.

How can you tell what type of sinus infection you have? Your doctor wont be able to tell you if your sinus infection is bacterial or viral based on symptoms or an exam alone. The best way to tell the root of a sinus infection is symptom duration. If its a viral sinus infection, it should start to improve after five to seven days. On the other hand, a bacterial infection often lasts seven to 10 days or even longer and the infection can get worse after seven days.

Avoid Antibiotics And Steroids For Your Dogs Ear Infections

Vets will often prescribe antibiotics, steroids, and topical medication. These medicines may help clear up your dogs ears at first but the problem often returns later. Thats because drugs only treat the symptoms you can see. They dont address the underlying condition thats causing the symptoms. And they can have negative side effects.

Antibiotics used;for bacterial ear infections disrupt the bacterial balance in your dogs gut, which can lead to more health issues due to bacteria or yeast that grow out of control.;

Steroids work by suppressing the immune system and can cause harmful side effects. So avoid them if you can.;

Discharge and inflammation in the ears is a sign the bodys trying to remove toxins absorbed through food, medications and her environment. Thats;a good thing! Your dogs body is working to heal itself by getting rid of harmful substances. When;you close off that exit route by using suppressive drugs, it can drive the disease deeper. Itll come back somewhere else. And that means your dog will get sicker often with a more serious disease.

So, finding the cause of your dogs ear problems is the key to ridding her of them once and for all. Fortunately, there are ways you can do this at home.;

Earaches Usually Go Away On Their Own

When it comes to ear infections, many will clear up on their own within a 2-10 days.

Earaches;are often not even caused by bacteria, so antibiotics arent the best treatment. This is why it breaks my heart when children get placed on antibiotics over and over again for reoccurring ear infections. This practice is usually not effective;and can set up a lifetime of digestive and health issues.

Thats why its a good idea to treat an earache with natural remedies at home first to avoid unnecessary antibiotics.

HOW TO TREAT KIDS EAR INFECTIONS! | NATURALLY

Swimmer’s ear

Many cases of otitis externa may be prevented by decreasing the opportunity for water or moisture to enter the ear canal by taking the following measures.

  • Carefully dry the ears after swimming or bathing
  • Shake out excess water in the ear.
  • Hold a hair drier on a low heat setting at least 12 inches from the ear
  • Wear earplugs while swimming.

Pain in the outer ear also can be caused by putting objects into the ear canal.

  • Do not use objects to clean the ear that may tear the skin. Most people have ears that are self-cleansing, and cleaning with a cotton-tipped swab is unnecessary and potentially harmful. People who have excess wax buildup should have it removed by a health-care professional who can remove the debris under direct vision using an otoscope or with ear irrigation.
  • Occasionally, a foreign object such as an insect can cause inflammation and pain, and will need to be removed by a health-care professional.

Middle ear

  • Minimize exposure of infants and children to others with colds or upper respiratory infections. This may require altering day care visit patterns.
  • Avoid bottle feeding in the supine position.
  • Babies who are breastfed for the first 6 months have a decreased risk of developing ear infections.
  • Eliminate pacifier use after 6 months of age.

Salt Sock Or Warm Compress

Warmth does wonders for getting the lymphatic fluid moving and easing the discomfort of earaches. I tried the salt sock remedy recommended by Lillian Beard, M.D. with one of my littles last year and it was very helpful. Although salt is my preference because it has antimicrobial properties, rice works well, too.

Another option is a warm water bottle held over the aching ear or an onion poultice.

How To Treat An Ear Infection At Home

Ear infections can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or rarely yeast. There are three areas in the ear where ear infections can occur in adults and children.

  • Outer ear infections : An outer ear infection most commonly experienced is often known as swimmers ear. This infection usually is due to bacterial infection of the skin tissue covering the ear canal. Excessive immersion in water or injuring the ear canal by putting things in it makes you more likely to develop an outer ear infection.
  • Middle ear infections: A middle ear infection is an infection just behind the eardrum with pus trapped in the adjacent hollow cavity of the facial bone. Middle ear infections frequently are a complication of the common cold in children. Most middle ear infections are caused by viruses and will resolve spontaneously. Bacterial infections cause some middle ear infections, which requires antibiotic treatment.
  • Inner ear infections: Inner ear infections are very rare, and usually are caused by a virus. These infections are more accurately characterized as inflammation of the structures of the inner ear . Since these structures affect hearing and balance, inner ear infections cause symptoms such as ringing of the ears or dizziness and balance disruption . Usually, inner ear infections in adults and children need medical treatment.

The middle ear is responsible for transmitting sound from the outer ear to the inner ear.

    In addition to a middle ear infection, its also possible to have an outer ear infection like;swimmers ear;or an inner ear infection. Labyrinthitis is a serious inner ear infection that affects hearing and balance. People with;labyrinthitis often experience vertigo and some hearing loss.

    If a middle ear infection is bacterial, its most likely the bacteria;Streptococcus pneumoniae causing the infection. A virus can cause also cause ear infections. A a cold or allergies;can cause congestion that blocks the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. This congestion can lead to a buildup of fluid and pressure and provides an environment for bacteria or viruses that have traveled up the Eustachian tube into the middle ear to flourish, resulting in an ear infection.

    Even the CDC recommends breast-feeding children exclusively for the first six months of their lives and continuing until they are at least 1 year old. Injury to the ear, climate changes, altitude changes, pacifier use, family history of ear infections, and exposure to cigarette smoke are other risk factors.

    Massage With Or Without Essential Oils

    Massaging the outside of the ear and face/jaw/neck area with a carrier oil and if you have them on hand a few drops of essential oil is thought to encourage good circulation and facilitate normal drainage.

    Oils often recommended for this purpose are tea tree, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, oregano, chamomile, peppermint and thyme. Please keep in mind that some oils should not be introduced until child reaches a certain age. Ive created a guide to diluting essential oils and a list of child-friendly essential oils, but for this specific purpose here are some recommendations based on the oils mentioned above:

    Oils considered safe for children ages 3 months 6 years:

    Dilution recommendations: For children ages 6-15, the recommended dilution ratio is 1.5%

    Special cases: Eucalyptus & Peppermint

    Both of these oils are generally not recommended for use with young children due to their high concentration of 1.8 cineole, which can sometimes acts negatively on the temperature receptors of childrens lungs and cause slowed breathing. However, there are exceptions to this guideline, which you can read about here.

    Try Out Apple Cider Vinegar

    How To Naturally Treat Ear Infection in Children & Adults

    Another ingredient that has been used in herbal remedies for centuries is apple cider vinegar. This is an excellent option when the reason for the infection is fungus growing in or around your ear. The vinegar is acidic and will kill off the bad that is collected within the ear. It is also full of other nutrients that will support the immune system and reduce inflammation in your ear.

    The great news is you dont just necessarily need apple cider vinegar. You can use white or distilled vinegar. However, you will want to get apple cider vinegar as much as possible.

    Depending on where the infection is, you wont necessarily want to put the vinegar directly into the ear. This can cause some discomfort. If you are going to place it directly into the ear, make sure you dilute the vinegar with some water.

    The best thing to do would be to put the diluted vinegar onto some cotton wool and create an ear plug with it. Place this in your ear and allow the liquid to get to work. You only need the ear plug for five minutes. You can then use a hair dryer to dry out the ear, but do make sure your setting is as low as possible to avoid damage to the ear drum.

    Another option is to massage the diluted vinegar around the ear, allowing the skin to soak it in. If you have sensitive skin, you can find this becomes an irritant.
