    Android Compatibility With Hearing Aids

    Were sure the creators of Android would hate to hear that theyre just a section in a larger article about iPhones, but they dont differ enough from iPhones to justify a new article, so well touch on them here.

    Truth be told, Android app compatibility barely differs at all from that of iPhones. All the apps weve mentioned so far are featured on both the Apple and Android stores, and the reviews are similar for both versions.

    In fact, we havent found any apps that are available on one store and not the other, so if you can think of one, please let us know!

    Nov 20, 2013 | Headphones, Hearing Products |

    Apple is seeking to make cell phone use easier for hearing aid users. The US Patent & Trademark Office recently published a patent application from Apple that reveals improved technology coming to future iPhones.

    A hearing aid is typically worn by someone who suffers from hearing loss and can compensate for the hearing impairment by amplifying the local sound field. Hearing aids do not always function well with some portable communication devices such as mobile phones. One problem that has been experienced by those who wear hearing aids and have a mobile phone is that the microphone inside the hearing aid may pick up unwanted ambient acoustic noise from the surrounding background environment. This makes it difficult for the user to discern the desired speech.

    When the hearing aid is switched to its T-coil mode, however, the hearing aid microphone may be deactivated, and the T-coil is inductively coupled, via the local magnetic field, to the voice coil of the receiver in the mobile phone.

    Hearing aid compatible mobile phones are becoming more commonly available to the public. Currently, a few mobile phones contain an active noise cancellation block that is typically implemented using digital audio signal processing techniques, to help reduce or cancel out the acoustic background noise that may be heard by a user of the mobile phone.

    What If My Hearing Aids Can’t Connect

    A streamer links your mobile phone;to your hearing aids.

    If your hearing aid doesn’t include a feature for direct streaming from your smartphone to your hearing aids, don’t worry.;Manufacturers of wireless hearing aids long ago created a clever solution for accessing this prevalent wireless standard. Wireless hearing aids can use compatible assistive listening devices, often called streamers, to provide a communication link between the wireless technology in the hearing aids and any Bluetooth-enabled device.;

    The wireless hearing aids can;be paired with the streamer, and then the streamer can be paired with external devices. When its all set up, the streamer will pick up the Bluetooth signal from your phone, for example, and send it to your hearing aid via an FM signal or electromagnetic field, depending on the manufacturers design. Usually, the streamer is worn around the neck or placed in a pocket for hands-free operation. Speak to your hearing care provider about the best streamer option for you.;

    Like many technical fields, audiology is rife with acronyms. Many are identical to those used in other fields, to the consternation of anyone trying to learn them. Take REM or CIC, for example. Recently, a new acronym has begun to make inroads in audiology, or at least in the area of hearing aids: MFi. An abbreviation for Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad, MFi is a licensing program from Apple for developers of hardware and software peripherals that work with their iOS devices . It means that an electronic accessory has been designed to connect specifically to iPhone and has been certified by the developer to meet Apple performance standards. Manufacturers who join this program are allowed to display related logos on their products. When speaking of hearing aids, these peripherals may be accessory devices that communicate with iOS devices, or they may be the hearing aids themselves.

Between them, the two pieces of technology can result in better hearing and a higher quality of life. With your iPhone or iPad acting as a microphone, you will be able to set up environments that are much better suited to easy conversation, or hear things like presentations more easily.

    Its also worth noting that theres a difference between Apple phones and Android phones when were talking about hearing. Every hearing aid brand has wireless enabled hearing aids that will connect to both iPhones and Android phones. However, they will only do so through an intermediary streamer device. How To Enable Mono Audio On Iphone And Ipad

    Typical stereo audio includes distinct left and right channels, so each ear gets different sounds. Mono audio makes sure both ears get all the noise. You can also adjust the volume independently for either ear, so you everything from audiobooks to podcasts to songs to videos come in loud and clear.

  • Launch the Settings app from your Home screen.
  • Tap on Accessibility.
  • Tap the switch next to Mono Audio to turn it on.

  • Note: You can also use mono audio if a podcast or other audio file has screwed up the tracks and put all audio, or just one or two out of a group of speakers, on only one channel.

    Ios 14 Headphone Accommodation Settings

    Among the new features and upgrades of the new iOS 14 update, one in particular is of great interest to those with hearing aids or hearing loss. Apples new Headphone Accommodation Settings allow the user to customize headphone audio to a new level amplifying sounds and adjusting frequencies like one would with traditional hearing aids.

    The range and level of customization is somewhat lacking, however, and the list of supported headphones is still;very short. For those who can and wish to try it out, simply navigate to Settings -> Accessibility -> Audio/Visual -> Headphone Accommodations on your iPhone.

    Pair Oticon Opn hearing aids with iPhone

    The Apple AirPods Pro are among the best wireless earbuds on the planet but you may not know that you can use them as makeshift hearing aids if you need to amplify the world around you in a pinch.;

    Its important to note that Apples earbuds arent FDA-approved for use as hearing aids, and according to audiologist Abram Bailey, they wont work for more severe hearing losses.;

    However, a Headphone Accommodations feature released with iOS 14 means the AirPods Pro do sport some of the features you need to hear your surroundings more clearly, including personalized amplification and noise reduction.;

    This is because the feature works with the noise-cancelling earbuds Transparency mode, making quiet voices more audible and tuning the sound of your environment to your hearing needs. Transparency mode allows environmental sound to pass through the earbuds, and Headphone Accommodations allows you to adjust how loud this is essentially letting you amplify your surroundings, a little like a hearing aid would.

    This only works with the AirPods Pro, so these are your best bet if youre keen to use the accessibility feature to hear your surroundings more clearly.;
