Cleaning Your Hearing Aid
Because of the placement of a hearing aid inside your ear, its easy to get wax or residue build-up, which blocks the sound from moving through the hearing aid and into your ear. In order to maintain the effectiveness of the hearing aid, you can regularly clean your hearing aids at home.
Start with a gentle cloth rub of the hearing aid with a dry cloth. This will get rid of the outside debris. You can then remove the dome and clean the inside with a brush a dry toothbrush will work just fine.
The dome is the rubbery portion that goes inside the ear. You can also change the wax guard on your hearing aid with a little more effort involved. This requires having a replacement wax guard and a special tool. Some manufacturers have special hearing aid cleaning services they provide and manufacturers will do all the cleaning for you for a small fee.

Phonak Brio Hearing Aids
The Phonak Brio comes in behind-the-ear and custom in-the-canal models. These hearing aids have similar software and sound processing capabilities to the Phonak Marvel, the brand’s top-of-the-line hearing aids. In addition to Bluetooth streaming, the Brio also works with the PartnerMic streamer and TV Connector so you can listen to your TV in high-quality Dolby sound.
The Brio is app-controlled for precise adjustments. It can also be serviced remotely by Costco hearing centers. There’s also a power BTE option available if you have moderate to severe hearing loss.;

Department of Vocational Rehabilitation DVR will provide services to consumers who are deaf, hard of hearing or Deaf-Blind and meet DVR eligibility requirements. Assistance with hearing aids and other assistive listening devices may be provided to consumers who need such devices to secure or retain employment. DVR offices are located all around the state.
U.S. Veterans Administration The Veterans Administration will provide hearing aids and eyeglasses to veterans who receive increased pension based on the need for regular aid and attendance; are permanently housebound; receive compensation for a service-connected disability; are former prisoners of war;;or have received a Purple Heart medal. Otherwise hearing aids and eyeglasses are provided only in special circumstances and not for normally occurring hearing or vision loss. MedicareMedicare specifically excludes hearing aids and exams for fitting hearing aids. Hearing and balance exams are covered only if ordered by a doctor to see if you need medical treatment. How Often Can I Get A Free Hearing Aid In Australia
In Australia, we have probably the best and most enviable publicly funded hearing services program in the world. The Australian Governments Hearing Services Program issues funding for around 500,000 hearing aids to pensioners or veterans every year and the number is only growing. Of course with any tax payer funded scheme, there needs to be checks and balances to ensure funding only goes to those who meet specific criteria and when there is a need.The Hearing Services Program in Australia provides eligible participants with access to FREE or subsidised hearing aids every 5 years. The program does however have built in flexibility to ensure patients can get new hearing aids sooner when their circumstances significantly change or when there is a clinical need. This article will explore the various reasons someone may be able to get new FREE hearing aids sooner than 5 years. We will also look at a few specific examples from my own patients.
Hearing Aids That Can Be Reprogrammed
All hearing aids from major manufacturers have the capability to be reprogrammed. Look on the spine of your hearing aid to identify what manufacturer made the hearing aid that you would like changed. The major manufactures include:
- Starkey
- Widex
- GN Resound
If it has another name on it, it likely still can be preprogrammed. Some companies often relabel the major manufacturing brands as their own brand, this would include companies places like Costco, Sams Club, Beltone, and Miracle Ear. If the hearing aid was bought at one of these locations, it can be reprogrammed but only by that same business.
Whereas a hearing aid labeled with a major manufacturers name could be taken to literally any audiologists office and they could change the settings.

How To Qualify For Va Healthcare
To get hearing aids from the VA, you’ll need to apply for healthcare coverage through the Veterans Health Administration . This arm of the VA addresses current healthcare needs; it does not establish service connection for any injuries or disabilities you may have incurred during your service. You can apply online or over the phone. You may also be able to establish eligibility at a local VA Medical Center or Community-Based Outpatient Clinic . You’ll need your DD-214 and health insurance cards. The VA will also do a means test, so having a few years of tax returns handy can speed up the process.
Once you are deemed eligible for general VA healthcare, you are automatically eligible for audiology care, including hearing evaluations, hearing aids, assistive hearing technologies, and even cochlear implants if you need them. The VHA also provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for tinnitus.
Oticon Rechargeable Base Station
If your income is above a certain level, you may be required to pay about $100 in copayments for the evaluation and fitting, but the cost of the devices themselves are fully covered if you are eligible. Batteries, consumable supplies like wax guards, and follow-up care are also provided. If you are eligible but already bought hearing aids elsewhere, you can register them with the VA and then get these supplies at no cost.

What Causes Hearing Loss In Older Age
Most people who experience hearing loss as they get older do so because of wear and tear to the tiny hair cells in the inner ear.
There are also other factors that can cause hearing loss, such as:
- regular exposure to loud noise
- a history of middle ear disease
- a family history of hearing loss.
Some people have a condition called tinnitus, which causes you to have persistent noises such as ringing or buzzing. This can also be linked to hearing loss.

Beware Of Buying Used Hearing Aids On Ebay
Often a frugal hearing impaired person looks to buy used hearing aids. Used hearing aids cannot technically be sold by a professional as they as classified as medical devices but nothing stops a hearing aid user from buying them online via eBay or another site. As I discussed above, those used hearing aids could be reprogrammed for your hearing loss.The caution that I would give about this practice is that occasionally. A person will sell their hearing aid online to someone and then claim to their audiologist that the hearing aids were either lost or stolen. Their audiologist would then get a replacement set for them under the Loss & Damage policy that came with their hearing aids.If the person did this, it would mean that the original aids would technically be the property of the hearing aid manufacturer if they were ever found again. You would never know that this happened until the hearing aids break and you have then sent into the manufacturer for repair.If you did send the aid in for repair, the manufacturer would send a letter back to the audiologist saying that these aids were replaced under the L&D policy and the manufacturer would simply retain the devices. In essences, you would never see the devices again and likely have little recourse to recoup your money from the seller.I am not saying you cant buy them online, just know the risk that you are taking if they ever need to be repaired.
