What Kind Of Hearing Loss Do You Have
If you have hearing loss in both the low and high sounds , a more occluding fit from CIC or ITC styles will help process sound while still being quite discreet. The occlusion helps block out unwanted background noise.
But, if your hearing loss is primarily in the high frequencieswhich most people have, especially if they have age-related hearing lossthe open-fit RITE styles are the most comfortable because they let in the natural low-frequency sounds you are still capable of hearing, while amplifying the high frequencies. These options can also be equipped with advanced features to allow hearing aids to filter noise from speech, adapt to different environments, suppress feedback and wirelessly connect to mobile phones, a personal microphone system or other public assistive listening devices.

How To Put Hearing Aids In Your Ear
If youve recently taken a hearing assessment and invested in new devices, it might feel a little strange to put them in your ear each day.
You might also have concerns about how they should sit inside your ears, which is completely normal.
Thats why the House of Hearing team has put together a short video on how this works for in-ear devices.
These are the simple things to remember when putting your hearing aid in correctly:
- Blue on a hearing aid indicates its for your left ear red on a hearing aid indicates its for your right.
- The thinner end of the hearing aid sits in your ear canal, while the thicker end will cover the outer part.
- Push the hearing aid into your ear until you cant push anymore.
- Now, it will remain in your ear, and it wont fall out!
If you have any concerns or worries about your hearing aids, contact the team. Theyre ready to help you now!

What Research Is Being Done On Hearing Aids
Researchers are looking at ways to apply new signal processing strategies to the design of hearing aids. Signal processing is the method used to modify normal sound waves into amplified sound that is the best possible match to the remaining hearing for a hearing aid user. NIDCD-funded researchers also are studying how hearing aids can enhance speech signals to improve understanding.
In addition, researchers are investigating the use of computer-aided technology to design and manufacture better hearing aids. Researchers also are seeking ways to improve sound transmission and to reduce noise interference, feedback, and the occlusion effect. Additional studies focus on the best ways to select and fit hearing aids in children and other groups whose hearing ability is hard to test.
Another promising research focus is to use lessons learned from animal models to design better microphones for hearing aids. NIDCD-supported scientists are studying the tiny fly Ormia ochracea because its ear structure allows the fly to determine the source of a sound easily. Scientists are using the flys ear structure as a model for designing miniature directional microphones for hearing aids. These microphones amplify the sound coming from a particular direction , but not the sounds that arrive from other directions. Directional microphones hold great promise for making it easier for people to hear a single conversation, even when surrounded by other noises and voices.

How Can I Adjust To My Hearing Aid
Hearing aids take time and patience to use successfully. Wearing your aids regularly will help you adjust to them.
Become familiar with your hearing aids features. With your audiologist present, practice putting in and taking out the aid, cleaning it, identifying right and left aids, and replacing the batteries. Ask how to test it in listening environments where you have problems with hearing. Learn to adjust the aids volume and to program it for sounds that are too loud or too soft. Work with your audiologist until you are comfortable and satisfied.
You may experience some of the following problems as you adjust to wearing your new aid.
Putting On And Removing Hearing Aids
Putting and removing hearing aids can be daunting. The hearing aids themselves are not only expensive but hard to place in your ears while coordinating with a mirror properly. We want to encourage you that despite a learning curve, it is easy to attain this skill.

Why Do My Ears Hurt When I Wear My Hearing Aid
There are a variety of causes that could contribute to your pain.
1. Your hearing aid isnt placed properly
A twisted or misplaced hearing aid can cause skin pull or unwanted pressure. If youre sure youre following the manufacturers instructions for placement, it may be a sizing issue. The audiologists in our office are specialists in hearing aid fitting.
2. Your ears havent adjusted yet
Often, patients new to hearing aids express the complaint, my hearing aid irritates my ear. This is because it sometimes takes time for the skin and tissue around that area to become accustomed to wearing a hearing aid for extended periods of time.
3. Your hearing aid isnt clean
Failure to properly clean, sanitize and maintain hearing aids can cause infections, bacterial growth, and irritation. Always follow the manufacturers instructions on sanitation and cleaning, and use only those methods and solutions approved in order to avoid damaging the device.
4. You have an allergy to the materials
Occasionally, individuals may have specific, unique allergies to the materials used in creating a hearing aid. If the area breaks out in a rash, becomes red and sore, it is an indication that you may have the wrong materials. A specialist like the ones at ENTFPSS can help you determine how to proceed.

What Are The Different Types Of Hearing Aids
The type of hearing aid recommended for the individual depends on the person’s home and work activities, his or her physical limitations and medical condition, and personal preference. There are many different types of hearing aids on the market, with companies continuously inventing newer, improved hearing aids every day. However, there are 4 basic types of hearing aids available today. Consult your health care provider for additional information on each of the following types:
Are Your Activities Limited
If you are homebound, restricted in daily activities or have cognitive impairments, BTE devices with earmolds might be most suitable. Selecting earmolds made of soft, flexible material can help it fit comfortably in the ear and make it easy for a caretaker to assist. Other items to consider include assistive listening devices, such as include amplified telephones, special smoke detectors, bed-shaker alarms, doorbells that flash a light or a device to amplify the television.

Where Can I Find Additional Information About Hearing Aids
The NIDCD maintains a directory of organizations that provide information on the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, and language.
Use the following keywords to help you find organizations that can answer questions and provide information on hearing aids:
Do You Have Problems With Dexterity
If you have dexterity issues , its usually better to avoid smaller devices. Low-profile ITE or BTE devices with earmolds might be suitable because they are the largest instruments and easiest to handle. Additionally, the batteries will be the largestsize 13 or 675 which will allow for simpler battery swaps. Some BTE models come with rechargeable batteries, which are easy to use. Lastly, hearing aids that come with automated features should also be considered so you don’t have to use the tiny buttons to adjust the volume. You may also want to talk to your hearing care practitioner about the possibility of a remote control if the volume or program controls on your hearing aids are difficult to use. Do All Hearing Aids Work The Same Way
Hearing aids work differently depending on the electronics used. The two main types of electronics are analog and digital.
Analog aids convert sound waves into electrical signals, which are amplified. Analog/adjustable hearing aids are custom built to meet the needs of each user. The aid is programmed by the manufacturer according to the specifications recommended by your audiologist. Analog/programmable hearing aids have more than one program or setting. An audiologist can program the aid using a computer, and you can change the program for different listening environmentsfrom a small, quiet room to a crowded restaurant to large, open areas, such as a theater or stadium. Analog/programmable circuitry can be used in all types of hearing aids. Analog aids usually are less expensive than digital aids.
Digital aids convert sound waves into numerical codes, similar to the binary code of a computer, before amplifying them. Because the code also includes information about a sounds pitch or loudness, the aid can be specially programmed to amplify some frequencies more than others. Digital circuitry gives an audiologist more flexibility in adjusting the aid to a users needs and to certain listening environments. These aids also can be programmed to focus on sounds coming from a specific direction. Digital circuitry can be used in all types of hearing aids.

Degrees Of Hearing Loss
Hearing loss is the depreciation of an individual’s ability to hear certain frequencies at certain decibel level thresholds. For someone who has normal, healthy hearing, they will naturally have a very low hearing threshold. As a persons hearing depreciates or is lost, their hearing threshold rises.
For someone with a hearing threshold of sixty decibels or higher, they have moderately severe hearing loss. These individuals may have trouble hearing someone talking directly to them in a crowded environment. It is at this threshold that most people can begin to look for financial aid before starting treatment.
Microphones With Directional Input
All high-quality hearing aids employ directional microphones to pick up noises that come before you rather than to the side or behind you. Youll need a hearing device with microphones with directional input to talk to the folks in front of you and keep up with a conversation. You wouldnt want to miss what your friends are talking to you while hearing all about the family sitting at the table behind you at the restaurant.

How Can Hearing Aids Help
Hearing aids are primarily useful in improving the hearing and speech comprehension of people who have hearing loss that results from damage to the small sensory cells in the inner ear, called hair cells. This type of hearing loss is called sensorineural hearing loss. The damage can occur as a result of disease, aging, or injury from noise or certain medicines.
A hearing aid magnifies sound vibrations entering the ear. Surviving hair cells detect the larger vibrations and convert them into neural signals that are passed along to the brain. The greater the damage to a persons hair cells, the more severe the hearing loss, and the greater the hearing aid amplification needed to make up the difference. However, there are practical limits to the amount of amplification a hearing aid can provide. In addition, if the inner ear is too damaged, even large vibrations will not be converted into neural signals. In this situation, a hearing aid would be ineffective.

My Hearing Aid Irritates My Ear: What To Do
August 30, 2019 by drgoldberg
Its not uncommon to feel frustrated by the fit of your hearing aid. One study showed comfort is a defining factor in whether or not a patient wears their hearing aid. If you often find yourself thinking, My hearing aid irritates my ear, so I wont wear it, then this guide is for you.
Here are a few reasons your hearing aids may irritate your ear, as well as our recommended solutions
Tips For Drying Your Ear Canal Safely
- When showering, aim to do it prior to going to sleep, when you won’t be wearing your hearing aids. This way, you have all night for your ears to naturally dry out.
- After you’ve had a swim or a shower, make sure that you dry your outer ears with a towel to get rid of any excess moisture.
- Tilt your ear to the ground, pull on your ear lobe to open up the ear canal and let gravity drag the water from your ear.
- If this fails, the use of a hair dryer on a low heat can work. Hold it a few inches away from your ear, apply the hot air and wait until the moisture evaporates.
- There are earplugs available that can be made to fit perfectly, protecting your ear canal from any moisture. This is especially useful if you do a lot of swimming.
- It’s important not to penetrate your ears using cotton buds, fingernails or pointed objects. Your ear canal is very delicate and can be easily scratched and infected.
- Although it might surprise you, earwax does an important job. It keeps your skin supple and well oiled it protects against infection and it naturally cleanses your inner ear without your intervention. If you think your body is producing too much wax, then you will need to seek professional medical advice.
