There is a common misconception that sign languages are somehow dependent on spoken languages: that they are spoken language expressed in signs, or that they were invented by hearing people. Similarities in language processing in the brain between signed and spoken languages further perpetuated this misconception. Hearing teachers in deaf schools, such as or Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, are often incorrectly referred to as “inventors” of sign language. Between 2007 and 2012, while studying at Delhi Universitys St Stephens College and the Delhi School of Economics, Nipun Malhotra, chief executive of Nipman Foundation, doesnt remember coming across any deaf students. Looking back, the 31-year-old disability rights activist says the countrys population of deaf and speech disabled remains invisible at institutions of higher learning since most of them even fail to even complete school.
Last week, the Delhi High Court issued a notice listing a PIL filed by Nipun Malhotra seeking official recognition of ISL. Finally, the government, too, appears to be waking up to this. On September 23, minister of state for social justice and empowerment Krishan Pal Singh Gurjar said he would write to home minister Rajnath Singh to request that ISL be made an official language. The ministers initiative is welcome. This will bring Indias hearing-impaired community a step closer to having their only method of interaction recognised by the government. Once it is listed as an official language, the Union government can promote and develop sign language in an official capacity. It can then be used to conduct UPSC examinations, among others, and qualify for printing on currency notes.

History Of Sign Language
The recorded history of sign language in Western societies starts in the 17th century, as a visual language or method of communication, although references to forms of communication using hand gestures date back as far as 5th century BC Greece. Sign language is composed of a system of conventional gestures, mimic, hand signs and finger spelling, plus the use of hand positions to represent the letters of the alphabet. Signs can also represent complete ideas or phrases, not only individual words.
Most sign languages are natural languages, different in construction from oral languages used in proximity to them, and are employed mainly by deaf people in order to communicate.

As with any spoken language, sign languages are also vulnerable to becoming endangered. What Is Sign Language
Sign language is the bridge that connects us to the world of those who have an impaired hearing or verbal ability. An array of gestures made using hands, fingers, arms, head and facial expressions besides symbols constitute a sign language. It helps the deaf and the dumb to communicate with the people around them and vice versa. It enables them to understand the world around them through visual descriptions and in turn, contribute to the society. Heather Whitestone became the first deaf woman to win the Miss America pageant in the year 1995 proving to the world that such people can thrive equally well. Helen Keller is considered to be the first woman who was educated in spite of being deaf and blind using sign language.
Sign language is based on ideas rather than words. It is a language that cannot be written and comprises of 26 hand symbols each representing one alphabet. These symbols are conveyed using fingers and words are spelt. Words or names are expressed using a combination of finger spellings as well as gestures. Over the period of time standard sign languages, namely American Sign Language and British Sign Language have developed and are used by the deaf. Many deaf schools use a technique called total communication which implies the use of ASL or BSL, oral speech and lip reading.

In the Middle Ages, monastic sign languages were used by a number of religious orders in Europe. These were not true “sign languages”, however, but well-developed systems of gestural communication. Moreover, they did not take vows of total silence – despite popular belief, vows of total silence were only developed by some orders starting in the 17th century. The Rule of St. Benedict only forbade conversation in certain parts of the monastery or during certain hours of the day.
