Protect Yourself From Loud Noise Its Not Your Friend

One of the main causes of tinnitus and ringing ears is loud noises or loud music. The bones that your ear uses to pick up on vibration in the ear and turn it into something that you hear are the tiniest in bones your body. They, along with the other structures of the ear, vibrate slightly in response to sound as a way of picking it up and transmitting it.

If you expose your ear to very loud noises, it makes the vibrations more intense than they should be and can cause some lasting damage.

Protective earplugs or earmuffs are a good way to protect yourself if you live or work in a place that makes completely avoiding loud noises impossible. How Do You Stop The Ringing In Your Ears

Do Youve Constant Buzzing Or Ringing In Your Ears? Try These Tinnitus ...

The first step to treating tinnitus is to get your hearing checked by an audiologist.

“If you are hearing continuous sound in your ears, it is very likely some measurable hearing loss is present,” says Dr. Vrabec. “A hearing test will uncover how severe the hearing loss is or whether your tinnitus may be the result of something else.”

If you have hearing loss and worsening tinnitus, the good news is that you don’t have to live with a never-ending soundtrack of unwanted noise.

“When treating tinnitus, the goal is to activate and condition your auditory cortex reinforcing it to listen to real sounds and training it to not think about the unwanted noise it’s perceiving,” says Dr. Vrabec. “So we’re not actually removing the tinnitus, we’re just eliminating your brain’s attention to it. This is accomplished by listening to masking sounds, some comforting sounds you can play in the background, such as rain, a stream or waterfall, the beach.”

“These types of sounds are quite valuable at inhibiting the perception of tinnitus,” says Dr. Vrabec. “They keep your brain busy, making it less likely to fixate on the ringing.”

Most people find success in using masking sounds to reduce their tinnitus, but this isn’t always the case.

“If your symptoms continue to progress or worsen, let your doctor know,” says Dr. Vrabec. “There are medications that can be considered.”

Why And How Does Tinnitus Develop

Tinnitus is believed to be caused by inner ear cell damage. Cilia in your inner ear move in relation to the pressure of sound waves. This triggers the inner ear cells to release an electrical signal through the auditory nervea nerve that sends messages from your ear to your brain. Your brain interprets these signals as sound.

An audiologist may test two people who report identical loudness and frequency of tinnitus, yet one person suffers from it and the other barely notices it.

Prolonged exposure to loud sounds

Ear Bone Changes

Some changes in the structure of theear may also give rise to these conditions. Examples include the stiffening ofthe bones in the middle ear. Such alterations may affect the manner in whichyou perceive sound and ultimately give rise to this condition.

Possible Reasons Your Ears Are Ringing

More and more, people are turning to nondrug treatment approaches to help them manage their health conditions, and tinnitus is no exception.

Relaxation therapy by allowing people to better manage the stress and anxiety associated with tinnitus can help many people with the condition. While relaxation treatment does not make the tinnitus go away, it can help people ignore it and feel less distressed by its presence. Research has also found that mindfulness practices, especially when coupled with CBT, can also help reduce the distress and distraction associated with tinnitus.

Hypnosis and acupuncture are two complementary therapies that come up frequently in the tinnitus literature. Unfortunately, the research to date on both of these treatments has been underwhelming. So far, theres no good evidence that either works for people with tinnitus.

The practice of mindfulness has been associated with benefits like stress reduction.

Signs And Symptoms Of Tinnitus

Youve likely experienced tinnitus before. Nearly everyone has, even if it was just for a short time, such as that ringing or hum you hear after attending a loud workout class or concert. Tinnitus that lasts longer than six months is called chronic tinnitus.

Tinnitus is common and affects about one in every six people. Its more common for people 55 and older, but young people can experience it, too.

There are two types of tinnitus:

  • Objective tinnitus This kind of tinnitus is very rare and describes a sound that a physician can also hear during an examination of your ear. It could be the result of an issue with your blood vessels or muscle contractions, or it could indicate theres something going on in the middle of your ear.
  • Subjective tinnitus Only you can hear this type of tinnitus think of it as a phantom noise. Subjective tinnitus is much more common than objective tinnitus and is what most people are referring to when they talk about tinnitus. Because youre the only one who can hear it, it can be difficult to describe to a doctor. And since there are so many types of tinnitus and no way to measure it, it can be tough for doctors to treat.
  • Its important to note that tinnitus, by definition, isnt a disease or a condition. Instead, its a symptom of something else thats happening in the body . In rarer cases, tinnitus can be a side effect of a medication.

Tinnitus isnt a disease. Rather, its a sign that somethings wrong in the auditory system.

An ENT specialist shares 10 strategies for coping with tinnitus

Just as a ringing bell can sound a warning, ringing in your ears can be a signal to pay attention to your body.

Ringing in your ears, or tinnitus, starts in your inner ear. Most often, it is caused by damage to or the loss of sensory hair cells in the cochlea, or the inner ear.

Tinnitus can present in many different ways, including sounds related to the ocean, ringing, buzzing, clicking, hissing or whooshing. The sound can be in one or both ears, constant or occasional, loud or soft. Often, it is more noticeable at night when you’re not distracted by work or family. It is often associated with hearing loss.

And it’s more common than you might expect. Over the past year, about 10 percent of the U.S. adult population has experienced tinnitus lasting at least five minutes, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Hearing Disorders.

“It’s not life threatening, and it is more of a symptom of other problems rather than a disease itself, but it can be debilitating,” says otolaryngologist Ashok Jagasia, MD, PhD. “In some people, the distracting sound can cause depression, anxiety and/or insomnia.”
