The medical examination may be performed by any licensed physician including your family doctor or pediatrician, but preferably should be done by an ear, nose, and throat specialist . An examination of your ear, nose, and throat and possibly other testing can be done to rule out any medical reason for your hearing loss, such as infection, injury or deformity, ear wax in the ear canal, and, in rare cases, tumors.
- Audiological examination. An audiological exam, or audiogram, involves a hearing evaluation by a hearing health professional that specializes in evaluation, non-medical treatment, and rehabilitation of hearing loss to identify the type and amount of your hearing loss, to determine the need for medical/surgical treatment and/or referral to a licensed physician, and to provide rehabilitation of the hearing loss.

Each of these offers there own form of assistance. Some give free hearing aids to very low income senior citizens, the disabled, or maybe a sick child. How We Chose The Best Hearing Aid Brands
ReputationFinding a company with a great reputation matters so that you can avoid cheaply made devices. Its easy to find companies with a reputation for quality at an audiologists office, but choosing companies online is more difficult. We were careful to only include brands that have received significant positive press or attention from experts in the industry. We avoided all brands that appeared to be extremely new without any reviews.
ProgrammingWe only included companies that allow significant personalization of their hearing aids. Most companies on our list will create four or more customized sound programs for their users. By and large, companies make their customizations using a patients audiogram , though there are exceptions. Some brands on our list provide apps for user-led customization instead.
ServiceProper maintenance of hearing aids is crucial, so we selected companies with an eye on how service is performed. Hearing Aids From Non
Community clinics may sometimes have discounted or possibly even free hearing aids. Or if they dont, then social workers from the centers can provide others forms of support to hard of hearing and/or deaf people. This can range from referrals to regional hearing aid banks, state assistive technology loan programs, sliding fee scale programs, and resources for the disabled. Senior centers can be a source of referrals and information. Staff and volunteers from the locations will coordinate workshops and hold information sessions. The elderly and their spouses can learn about grant programs, places to contact for hearing aids, and more.
There are some regulations that require government agencies, non-profit organizations, school, educational institutions, and employers to provide some form of access to communications. This may be required by state and federal government law in certain cases. Examples to this may be senior centers, mid-size to large employers, hospitals, and more. Batteries Repairs And Replacements
If you have an NHS hearing aid, you can get free batteries and repairs from the NHS hearing aid service who fitted your hearing aids.
Ask your audiologist about how to obtain batteries and request servicing and repairs.
You may need to come in for an appointment, or you may be able to send off for a battery or repair in the post.
Your local hearing aid service can also replace hearing aids that have been lost or damaged, although there may be a charge for this.
If you have a private hearing aid, contact your hearing aid provider if you need it repaired or replaced.
You may have to pay for this service if it’s not already included in your payment plan.
Consult Your Audiologist For Low
An audiologist can help you with affordable hearing aids coming from local non-profit groups. Hearing Aids Purchase Process
Assessment
Before you can request hearing aids, you must have a complete hearing assessment. This assessment may be done by an AADL vendor or by an audiologist working for Alberta Health Services. Once a diagnosis is made and any possibility of medical intervention ruled out, you may proceed to discuss your hearing aid options.
Counselling
The hearing professional will use the information from the assessment to make recommendations regarding your hearing aids.
Fitting
When the hearing aids are ready, an appointment is made to fit the devices. The devices are checked for proper fit and comfort, and the aids are programmed to meet your specific hearing needs.
You will also receive instruction on the proper care, use and maintenance of your hearing aids. At the fitting, the vendor will ask you to pay your cost-share portion and any upgrade costs, if applicable.

What Causes Hearing Loss In Older Age
Most people who experience hearing loss as they get older do so because of wear and tear to the tiny hair cells in the inner ear.
There are also other factors that can cause hearing loss, such as:
- regular exposure to loud noise
- a history of middle ear disease
- a family history of hearing loss.

- Your hearing assessed by a qualified audiologist at Expert Hearing Care, at no cost.
- If the assessment indicates that a hearing aid or other device would assist you, we will help you select a model from a range of quality hearing aid manufacturers some of the devices are FREE of charge. If not the federal government will subsidise part of the cost, so pensioners and veterans have full access to more advanced solutions.
- We will train and counsel you in ways to obtain the maximum benefit from your hearing devices, at no cost.
- You can obtain a maintenance contract from us for your hearing aids, which also covers you for hearing aid batteries. The maintenance is heavily subsidised by the federal government so that your annual contribution is minimal.
