Whats The Procedure For Ear Tube Insertion

Pop Or Drain Your Ears And Relieve Sinus Pressure | How To Drain Eustachian Tubes | Physical Therapy

For the insertion, an otolaryngologist places tiny plastic or metal tubes in the eardrum. Once inside the ear, these tubes will:

  • Reduce pressure. Ear infections and fluid buildup increase pressure inside the ear, which is what causes pain. Ear tubes allow air to enter the ear, equalizing the pressure between the inner ear and the outside world. This eases pain and helps prevent accumulation of liquid in the middle ear.
  • Drain fluid. Ear tubes allow pus and mucus buildup from ear infections to drain out of the ear without causing pain or increasing the risk of related complications.
  • Prepare the ear for treatment drops. Tubes also make it easier to use antibiotic drops in the ears to treat infections. The tubes function as a passageway, permitting the drops to travel directly into the ear. Because they make antibiotic drops easier to use, the tubes can eliminate the need for oral antibiotic treatment.

Ear tube insertion, also called myringotomy and tympanostomy tube placement, is a very common procedure performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the patient is asleep and breathing on their own. The surgical team monitors heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen throughout the surgery.

The actual surgery takes only about 10 to 15 minutes. During this time, the surgeon performs the following steps:

Ear tube insertion is a common and safe procedure. On rare occasions, however, complications may occur. Check with your doctor if you:

The Process Of Popping Your Ears

The part of your ear that pops is in your Eustachian tube. This tube is made to protect your middle ear and ventilate it. The Eustachian tube works to keep air pressure equal on both sides of your eardrum.

When pressure builds up in your middle ear, your Eustachian tubes will open. The pressure in your ear equalizes when the tubes open. This is what makes your ears pop, to relieve pressure and potential pain.

Your healthcare provider will ask you a lot of questions in order to develop a detailed medical history and find out about your symptoms. They will also do a physical examination. Are There Any Operations To Treat Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

The two main operations available treat ETD are grommet insertion and/or balloon Eustachian tube dilation

Grommets/ventilation tubes – these are small plastic tubes with a hole in the middle that can be inserted into the eardrum under a local or general anaesthetic. Air can pass directly through the grommet, bypassing the Eustachian tube. Grommets can be a very effective treatment for ETD. They usually stay in place for about 6-9 months, and the symptoms sometimes recur when the grommet falls out. In a small percentage of cases, grommets can actually make the symptoms worse. This usually occurs when an incorrect diagnosis has been made, and the symptoms are not due to ETD. The disadvantage of grommet insertion is that the ears need to be kept dry whilst the grommets are in place. There is also the risk of infection, or a hole in the eardrum, which occurs in about one in fifty grommets that are inserted.

Put a few drops in a bowl of boiling water and inhale to unclog your sinuses and help relieve pressure in your ears.

  • Antihistamines – if you have an allergy, antihistamines sometimes help.
  • Gently pop the ears several times a day
  • Smoking causes inflammation in the upper airways, and can lead to ETD. Stopping smoking often helps.
